new pups in an RGT320Q?

I have an RGT320Q and Im thinking of replacing the stock Dimarzio IBZs. Ive read that the Tone Zone/Air Norton combo seems popular, but Ive had some negative feedback about the TZ. Im thinking Evo2/Air Norton. Im looking for a diverse sound, good heavy hard rock tone (Van Halen I, Petrucci), nice thick heavy sustaining bluesy tones (Gary Moore), awesome clean stuff ala tone god Steve Morse, and some nice quack in the 2 and 4 positions. Also, the number 4 position is currently wired in parallel (whatever that means?) and is fairly unexciting. How would you guys recommend wiring the #4 position with an Air Norton?

Thanks guys, I’m looking to learn from your experience!

Well....who ever told you something negative about Tone Zone, should have his head examined

I have it in my RG3120TW and it´s fantastic....

Both air norton and Paf pro are great for neck together with TZ

I also think that Tone Zone is maybe not the best pickup for mahogany guitars... I have one on my J-Custom 8470 and I think it's a bit bassy.... I think it works better on a basswood guitar... just my 2c...

I've been very curious also about the EVO2... It could definitely be great on your guitar!! Especially with an Air Norton...
If you want a bit more power, try the EVO bridge with a FRED in the neck! awesome!!!!!!!

I went with a Tone zone and Paf Joe setup on my RGT320qrbb and I love it.

I also have a TZ in my RG3120. It's not bad, but I don't think it's perfect for mahogany either.

Re: new pups in an RGT320Q?

I installed an Evolution & Paf Pro in my RGT320Q.. SO far it's working out pretty well. I MIGHT go with a slightly brighter pickup in the bridge at some point but for now I'm relatively happy with this combo.. A definite step up from the IBZs that in all honesty probably aren't as bad as they're made out to be.

The TZ in my 8670 is horrendously bassy aswell. I have the bass on 3 on my amp and its jsut about right - anything more and it's horrible.

Trying an Evo II soon, to see what that's like.

Re: new pups in an RGT320Q?

i've got an EVO II in a basswood, maple necked RG and i really like it. i want to try one in my 7VWH to see how it sounds in alder.
with a maple and mahogany bodied guitar my choice would be a JB/Jazz or JB/'59. i've fallen for the old Dimarzio Double Whammy pickup in my mahogany bodied Jem custom coupled with a PAF in the neck - very nice balance and tones. i'd almost prefer the Dimarzio DW and PAF in a tremmed guitar over the Duncans. the Duncans work great for me in hard tail and tune a matic guitars while the Dimarzio DW was made for a tremmed guitar.

Hey...you guys with too much bass with your TZ - Is it possible that your TZ is too close to the strings?

Just wondering..as I really can't understand it.....Mine is absolutely not too bassy..... Mahogany with Maple top....

Nah, I tired piddling with the string height, but the bass response was still very heavy.

I'd like to try a D-Sonic sometime. Could be interesting.
