NGD! RGArt1! Restore or Gig?

Hey everyone - as you may have seen above, I grabbed RG Art1 #971026 off of the 'bay yesterday.. there's pics of it on page 13 of the RG Art registry above. It appears to be in average, used but functional condition, with non original case, at least one replacement pickup, bad chip on the end of the headstock, and heavy pitting on the trem. I paid $1500, which I think is fair. This one was on my " Ibby Bucket List " along with the puzzle I got a couple of months ago. I'll have to sell off a few other things to pay for it, but it's worth it, they don't come around very often.

Anyway - I'm for sure going to have my tech repair the headstock, that's a given. I'll look for a newer Prestige case for it, I think those are nice. If I could find the maroon lined 1000 case that would be cool to. The question I want to put to you guys is:

Restore it or Gig with it?

I've got enough super clean guitars I won't take out of the house - and I use an Ibby to play "Echoes" at every gig - so I won't be taxing it that hard. This one has been knocked around enough that I can be comfortable with it. If I gig it I may ( I know, sorry guys) put Railhammer Chisels in it.. They sound GREAT and I think the half blade / half poles pickup would look cool with the body graphics..

If I restore it, I've got some questions. I know I could dig thru this forum and find the answers, but you guys will know.
- did it originally have the recessed strap buttons and locks like my 1802?
- which DiMarzios are original B & N? It looks like only the neck pickup has been changed, but I won't really know until I get in there.
- Does Rich have a bridge available for this? Do you guys think it's worth replacing if I really want to dial this in? The one thats on it is pretty rough. Knobs also...

I'll take pics on my bench when it gets in this week.

Restore.
There are plenty of beaters you can have to keep the miles of the art.

Great score Ken. If your tech can do a perfect job of it, go for it......... otherwise I'd leave the headstock be. The body and neck look to be in great condition other than a good cleaning and a buff. I'm sure Rich has the hardware you want, but email him first. He rarely updates his inventory on the parts page. I'd CERTAINLY replace all the hardware.......

Tone Zone/Air Norton were the correct pups.

Cosmo trem kit: 2ED1R31K
Cosmo Tuner set: MB500CK
Cosmo Tree: 2TL27K
Cosmo knobs: 4KB1J1K
Cosmo Strap pins: 4EP1JH2K
Cosmo nut: Check with Rich, there are a few options for top or rear mount

I'd restore it. Cosmo hardware is easy enough to come across and is generally exactly the same, with the exception of the tuners. The newer tuners are subtly different. You'd have to see them next to eachother to see the difference. But there are plenty of really nice cosmo tuner sets from the 90's on eBay.

Current tuners:

They have much more square corners, the shaft to the knob is slightly thinner and there's a black washer in there.

80's/90's tuners:

Much more rounded edges, thick silver bushing and fatter shaft.

Strap buttons could be harder to come by. It should use the cone style ones most JC's have. Here's the pic from Rich's site. It's the catalog shot:

It looks like it has either gold or powdered gold strap buttons.

In that picture they're clearly cosmo.

Gotoh definitely makes them:

Page 35 of the catalog. They're EP-FR2 and you want them in the CK2 color.

I'd contact Rich and see if he can special order them for you.

Restore AND gig I say. Great score man!! I've seen that particular guitar before. Needs some work but what a great guitar to own. One of the most iconic J Custom models of them all and pretty hard to come by. Congratz!!!!

I'm going to leave the original parts on it and just grab a neck pickup for now...

It came in today, and it was dusty with some funny stuff: Toothpicks crammed in the strap button holes, matchbook folded under the neck pickup, pricetag shim in neck pocket..etc.

I took some before shots for you:

Agreed - got the neck pickup today. I'm leaving all the hardware alone.

However - I really want to touch up the headstock. It looks horrible. It would have to be done carefully, and built up a little to smooth it out....

Re: NGD! RGArt1! Restore or Gig?

As promised, more pics.

- I put in the correct neck pickup, but I still need the correct 5 way switch.
- I left the straplocks and other hardware alone, I'm gonna gig it a little.
- We touched up the headstock, good from 3 feet. I feel better about it.

The SD pickup that was in it is for sale in the classifieds.

I'm not generally a proponent of case queens but I would play this maybe at home now and then but not gig with it. That's just me.
Sweet guitar. I've been guilty of the toothpicks in the strap button holes myself (usually shaved fine with wood glue included) but that other stuff is nutty, especially the price tag shim.
Also, side note. Nice Michigan duct tape. My buddy at work and I ran into the guy who runs that company in the Detroit airport.
