pickups for RG2820 and RG2620

Hi there

What are the pickup recommendations for RG2820 and RG2620?
I am thinking to install Evolution Bridge and neck on 2820 and EMG actives on 2620 just to get a different tone.
I play wide range of genre, so versatility is important for me.
Requirement for 2820 is a nice clean tone, fat distortion and screaming lead with good bass.

The idea is to use 2820 for classic 80’s 90’s rock stuff and 2620 for extreme distortion sounds.

Thanks

There is no set pickup recommendation for any model, it's just personal preference. I have a 2820 too, and I still have the stock pups in them, I think I will go for the Tone Zone/Air Norton combo when I finally get around to it, hopefully I can get fairly close to an early Petrucci tone.

From what I have heard Evo's too hot, so I'm not sure if you're going to get much versatility from it.

Which 2620 did you get?

Evos are not really good with clean. Breeds are maybe what you're looking for. As for the 2620, EMGs do seem like a good choice.

Re: pickups for RG2820 and RG2620

i have a 2550 that i have just put a breed(neck) and a blue velvet(middle not that makes any differance on a 2820) and a tone zone in and it is awsome, good bass with the lead tones you sound like your after, clean is ok to if you just back off the volume a tad.

Guess its hard to say if you will like that sound but i do and i know that the only differance pickup wise to a j custom is the breed. good luck with whatever you choose

Thanks guys. Looks like Tone Zone with Air Norton or Breed will be a good choice for 2820. But I heard that Breed is a bit weak.

Can Breed (neck) produce a fat and warmth distortion sound on mahogany body?

Re: pickups for RG2820 and RG2620

Im not sure about mahogany, but in bass wood it is rich warm and big. Under real heavy distortion it may be a bit "muddy" but the sound difference for me was awesome and everyone that I have played for since then wants the same.

Sorry I cant shed light on mahogany. Apparently on alder, there is a difference.
