Question on foam

hi all , just need to know what sort of foam to use to pack the pickup on my j custom or any direct mount for that matter, i heard that the foam thats under gets to compressed and when you raise them they dont . (hope that makes sense)

is it soft foam squezzy foam or what ? where do i get it and is it as simple as unscrew pickup and then replace foam and set to desired hieght?

That's true about the foam not rebounding, for some reason when I bought a 7321 the neck pick-up was screwed all the way down and the foam didn't rebound and I had to replace it. The foam isn't really spongy, the air pockets are very small, so they look solid. It's the same thin foam Ibanez uses in the trem route's on the face of bodies to protect them from chipping, just a lot thicker. I don't know where to get some, but any fairly firm rectangular foam would get the job done. Yes it's as simple as you think.

You can use the foam that your new pick-ups come packaged with. That's what I did when I changed the bridge on my 1570 to a dimebucker.

Try a bath sponge.

That's a bit too soft. If he does any playing while standing and moving around a bit it would probably make the sponge act as a shock aborber underneath the pup. I would opt for something a little more firm, just in case your going to be moving a lot, even if your not it's a better idea to find something more firm.

Try a chunk of memory foam. Like tempurpedic mattresses or pillows. I used some for a different application.(To pad an electronic component) and it worked fine. Took it from a neck pillow my wife bought and didn't use.Just a suggestion.

try weather stripping. it actually has an adhesive on it. hardware stores stock it.

This was the case with my two recent RGT's. The pick-ups were way too low and the stock foam wouldn't rebound. It's and easy fix. I still have the packaging & foam from an EMG set that I used on another guitar.

thanks guys , so a thickish foam is ok as long as it has some give in it.

I havn't looked under my body mounted pickups ever but why couldn't u just use springs? Is it too hard to find one the right size that could also hold a pickup and not collapse?

In some cases, the pick up doesn't level properly when using springs.
