RG2550E or RG1550?
hi Guys,
I'm looking into buying either a
RG2550E
or a
RG1550
, which one would you suggest? I mainly play metal and it's going to be a backup, alternative to my JEM77VBK.
Thanks for your input!!!!

I would get an RG550, RG570, RG750, RG770 or an RG560, rather than a 1550 or 2550, get one on EBay but check the necks.

MF is clearing out RG2550E's it seems for $700! If I had the scratch I'd get a galaxy white!

Re: RG2550E or RG1550?
You hear it all the time: "don't buy new, buy a used _________."
Yes, you can get a bargain but you take more risk.
The guitars you named are very similar. I'd probably go with whichever one I could get cheaper. I just wouldn't buy the 1550 in white plaster finish because it literally looks like the wall in my apartment.
I've played the 1550 but not the 2250E. I'd go with the 2550E because I'm not a huge fan of the V7 and V8 humbuckers. I'd think the DiMarzio/IBZ pickups would give a better metal tone. Also it's $699 right now at MF while the 1550 is $999.
Peace
Mike

For that price I might look around the house for things I can sell to come up with $700.
I don't need a vacuum cleaner, right?

Go with what's cheaper. It's going to be a back-up anyway which means that you just use it to get by when your main guitar breaks a string at a gig....

Re: RG2550E or RG1550?
Well since no one has recommend the 1550 (I have the Poisoned Pumkin) yet and you mentioned it, I'm going to recommend it. Sure it's not fancy looking, but it is a workhorse. And I would hope that if you are progressed enough in your playing to be in a band and need a backup axe, you probably have a hot pickup lying around you can slap in there, right?

Well the RG550 and 570 both have super thin necks, I think most of them have either original Edges or Lo-Pros, depending on the year made. And.... They look awesome.

Re: RG2550E or RG1550?
thanks for your input! The 2550 it is, it's just a great price and I've added a super distortion (and a boss gt-10 :-D ). The guitar is a backup but it's also good to have a "cheaper" one to grab at home instead of wearing off the JEM.

Re: RG2550E or RG1550?
I think both guitars are so similar that you really could not go wrong with either one. I think it depends on the price that you find them at. As mentioned MF has the 2550e in two colors brand new shipped for $700. Pretty smoking deal for a brand new guitar. But if you gotta have a maple fretboard then the 1550 all the way.

Re: RG2550E or RG1550?
I have an RG2550Z (black) and think the DiMarzio/ibz pickups sound damn good for metal (through a Peavey JSX). You also get awesome sharktooth inlays instead of stupid dots. As far as the tremelo's are concerned, they each have their own ups and downs
.
Edge Zero Pros:
go between standard and drop d without messing with the springs
super easy to set intonation
bending doesn't cause other strings to go out of tune
Edge Zero Cons:
I'm not crazy of how the fine tuners are positioned
Edge Pro Pros:
Fine tuners in better spot
No loose parts to keep track of
Edge Pro Cons:
retainer rod on headstock
have to mess with springs to change to drop d (you can always get a trem stopper though)
I'll say my guitar looks awesome in person, I love the pickquard. Galaxy black looks awesome under bright lights.

The 2550 is a great choice - I have a 2550z and it is a beautiful guitar....and the galaxy black finish is sooper cool - no fingerprints ;o) And if you can get it for $700 ish then that is a great deal...I bought mine new a couple of years ago and I paid about $1,200 here in Canada...

Re: RG2550E or RG1550?
I just bought an RG1550M-PBL for under $700.
Personally I'm not a big fan of the Edge Zero vibrato (it's NOT a tremolo, look up the definitions of both words.
)
It's usually stiffer feeling on dives, it can sometimes 'clunk' when you do a heavy vibrato and it just looks too 'industrial' to me. (Keep in mind you can remove the ZPS3, but if you do you're really losing the whole point of the "Z" design.)
I like the Original Edge the best, but the Edge Pro is a great bridge, it's easy to work with, has a great feel and I can live with the string retainer bar, I have for over 20 years with my RG550CM.
The V7-S1-V8 pickups aren't bad, they aren't great, but they have a smooth, unique sound to them, and pups are always something that are easy to change.
I have an RG2570EXVSL with the Dimarzio/IBZ pups, and they are really geared towards metal. They are loud as <bleep> and voiced with the idea that you're going to have your gain and volume both on 11.
I'll most likely be changing the pups on my 1550, but I'm going to replace all the electronics so I can keep the original soldering in place if I ever want to put them back. (This is one of the reasons I really prefer a guitar with a pickguard, very easy to remove everything if you want, with only minimal desoldering.)
Just some opinions of mine, don't take any of what anyone here says as 'guitar gospel' as it's all to taste.
Play both, one of them may 'speak' to you, or both of them may not... if both of them do, one will 'say' more of what you want to hear, and you should buy that one.
