RG2550EGK Question

I recently bought an Ibanez RG2550EGK, but I have a question about setting it up.

This is the first Floyd Rose guitar I have, since my other one is a locked bridge Fender Stratocaster. I want to lower the action of my prestige RG2550, but I am curious about what happens when I lower the action. Does the tension decrease when I lower the action? and Does the tension increase back up when I tune the guitar back up to normal?

OR Does the tension decrease, and I'd have to set up those springs in the back, since the action is vertical orientation and the tuning is horizontal orientation?

Thanks for the feedback.

Re: RG2550EGK Question

It depends how much you want to lower the action by. I find a very low action great for chords not so great for string bending and not great for tone. A minor adjustment to the action shouldn't affect the string tension hardly at all, but you will be able to tell coz the angle of the trem will change.

Re: RG2550EGK Question

No change in tension just by dropping the action slightly. There will be a slight change in intonation so that will need to be touched up slightly. Different string guage will affect tension for sure. Different brand strings of the same guage would probably not affect it. Check for shims under the locking nut as you may be able to remove them and get lower action in the first position. I like to fret the string at the 3rd fret and see the slightest space between the string and the first fret. Any more than a few slips of paper is higher than needed. I agree with GAZ on his comments but I prefer to go low action and switch to 10-46 for improved tone. Just my opinion.
