RG8420ZD available in Purple Amethyst at Ikebe

...and this time it's not just the black guitar photographed in a strong light! Not for me, but I know some of you love purple!

Has anyone tried these with the Seymour Duncan pickups? - I've only heard the RG8420 with EMGs in.

Emg's ? are you sure? i have the 8470 with diMarzios, sweet.
Purple color is a cool idea, although the pic really does not complement the maple top of the guitar. I don't understand why anyone would put emgs in that guitar, i find it would rob it of its character (sound wise).

I have an 8470 in Red with the same Duncan combo from the factory. Absolutely amazing! Both pickups sound great! It's the only one of my J-Customs where I didn't swap out the stock pickups. The Tone Zone and the Norton...both are pretty blah sounding to my ears on a good amp. Those Duncan's though.... beautiful on anything I have tried them with!

Neat colour that one is!!!!

ToneZone and AirNorton are blah sounding? Are You Kidding me?
Anyways, I guess sound is subjective. But out of curiosity what amp are you playing through, and what did you replace the ToneZone and AirNorton with? By the way I find both these PUPs smoke.

I have an 8470ZD RS. The sound is awesome, i'll never replace these pups on this guitar, they are perfect for mahogany body. I think that Tone zone + mahogany is not the best combination.

Re: RG8420ZD available in Purple Amethyst at Ikebe

Thanks Mozart and PBGas for the feedback on your Duncans. I agree TZ in mahogany isn't great - too muddy -but my best sounding guitar is a TZ in swamp ash, so I'm not against the pickup itself, just needs a bright wood to bring out the character.

What do you find the Custom5 is good for and could you compare it to any other bridge pickups? I've tried JB, D-Sonic, New7, Tone Zone, EMG81 and EMG85. I like a tight defined metal sound but with a full tone. The New7 in mahogany is amazing.

BTW the purple is growing on me - just seen one listed on a certain auction site.

The top on that guitar didn't look so great... But that could potentially be a pretty sweet guitar.

You can also see the PG Fireman with two humbuckers and a cherry wood top.

Hey....again, it's all opinion and subjective to what you like. The TZ and Norton are NOT bad pickups at all....I just don't like them, personally.
I replaced the Tone Zone and Norton in my RRG4 with a Dimarzio Super 3 in the bridge and an Evolution in the neck. The guitar absolutely screams now. Way more clarity in the bridge and neck with this setup.

Btw....my amps are a Diezel Einstein 100W with 2x12 front loaded Diezel cab and a Marshall JVM combo. Both great amps with very different tones. The Diezel is just plain amazing!

drool....Diezel....drool....
Can't imagine how much more she could scream, really i can't, and the bitch is that the only way to find out is actually switch on my 8470. Anyways, as long as everyone is happy with their own toys its all cool. Wouldn't mind having the Diezel though...

Well....the one thing is the output....I mean, with the Diezel, it's got so many great tones on it.....the biggest diff with the two pickups was the 375 output vs. the 435 on the Super 3. Great harmonics, etc. with it. Also....a touch less bass and a touch less mid and it's a sweet mix! It's one of those overlooked pickups. I've got the Evo's in J-Custom #1 to compare with and the SH-14 in J-Custom #2. All great sounding pickups which makes each guitar sound unique. The SH-14 Custom 5 is a great pickup!
