RGA 121 tight nut
My Nut on my RGA 121 is cut very nicely and gives no problem when loaded with 9's. If I try 10's they wont seat in the nut at all on the Base side, (havent got to trying the trebles) .
Is this usual.?
Any recommended actions or replacement NUTS?

Re: RGA 121 tight nut
you just need to have your nut slots re-filed to the different gauge width. being as you couldn't work out the problem yourself, i wouldn't try fixing it yourself. get a repair guy to do it.

Re: RGA 121 tight nut
Alternatively you could get a set of nut files from StewMac and do it yourself. Gotta be careful, though, if you cut too low, you'll have to get the nut replaced or build the slots up again with super glue. It's probably safest to let someone experienced/qualified do the job.

Dur yeah, I know that if the string wont fit then the gap is too small. Yeah I know they can be filed. (at least I dont come from Bolton!)
Maybe I didnt make myself clear. We have 5 guitars in the house and all but this one can take 9's or 10's in the same nut. They dont buzz from too much room in the nut and this one does not have tuning problems because it is too tight on 9's.
So what is the 'right' solution. Should the nut be so finely cut that a
string guage
change means a nut change/file?

Re: RGA 121 tight nut
Even for 9's the nut on the RGA121 is tight. I, along with several others as posted in the forums, had problems with the string sticking on certain strings because the nut is so dang tight.

Re: RGA 121 tight nut
A simple solution is to take and old string in your case a 10 low E string and cut off a length of string about lenght of your index finger, and glue it to a small piece of wood either dowel or small sqaure stock. Let it dry you will probably have to tape in place as it dries. Then take a small scale or ruler that will fit in the nut slot place it so you can see the angle that the nutt is cut to. That will be the angle you hold the file that you have made. Use a fine point marker one that stands out from the color of your nut(heh heh) on your guitar that is. Mark the bottom of the nut where the string sits file the opening with your homemade file stop when you start taking marker off. Remember you just want to widen it not cut any deeper. Hope this helps

I just took mine to my luthier and paid him $20 to widen the nut slots.

That was after I butchered the nut, though.

Re: RGA 121 tight nut
I ordered two different graphtech nuts for my RGA.
I should get them in a couple of days.
I will tell you which ref. fits best.

Do those come with pre-cut slots or do you have to cut them yourself?

Re: RGA 121 tight nut
Slots come pre-cut and graphtech advises not to cut them but to sand the base to get proper heigth.
So you save 80 bucks because you are not compelled to buy nut files!
What a relief : )
