Question

strings

hi, today i put new strings on my rg2550, the strings are .10 to .46 and when i started to tune the guitar i noticed the trem was very high, i adjusted it but my question is if the truss should be adjusted too.
thanks.

Re: strings

Yes, you generally need to adjust both the bridge and the neck whenever you change the strings gauge. You may also want to check your intonation although it shouldn't be far off if you're still in the same tuning.

Re: strings

Have fun getting it back to normal....

That's why I use .9 gauge strings; too much trouble.

Re: strings

You probably just need to tighten the truss rod a quarter turn and screw in the trem claw slightly. No big deal.

Check out the tech tutorials on Ibanez Rules. They should point you in the right direction re trem angles.

Re: strings

Im thinking of putting .09 gauge but with the top 3 strings of a .10 gauge,
Daddario makes em 125EXL, i think.
Anyone have any experience with that, would I need a major setup adjustment?

No major problems, just adjust the trem angle - probably no need for any truss rod adjustments

I just love the feeling of a new set of strings, not better than sex or anything, but they do feel nice

Not to mention they sound better, more amplified sound if you know what I mean.

Re: strings

Thanks,
Yeah new strings always feel great, thats why I try to change em at least once a month. (I would do it more often, but it just takes too much time away from my playing )

Re: strings

lalosd, You dont mention wether or not the new strings are heavier or lighter than the ones you had on befor the change. Because the trem went up, I suppose they are heavier. When changing to heavier strings, you usually have to adjust the bridge like you did. Sometimes changing to heavier guage strings will create more relief (bow) in the neck because of the added tension. If it does then you will have to tighten the neck like Wallopwallop mentioned. The object in tighting the neck will be to take away any relief the heavier strings added, thus bring it back to or around the same place it was when you had lighter strings on it.

This is why I don't use floating trems. Seriously though, once a guitar is set-up and its bridge adjusted for a certain gauge of strings, it's no big deal. Use the gauge of strings you like the feel and sound of. Don't let a floating trem's quirks deter you from using the strings you want.

Re: strings

Think of it as a learning experience.. Truss rod adjustments shouldn't be done unless the neck is bowing. If you switched to a heavier set of strings you may have to adjust the truss rod, but in most cases it's not needed.

Re: strings

Erm, I did the string change and I setup the guitar as suggested. Didnt touch the truss rod, just had to adjust the bridge. However there is a little quirk thats nagging me quite a bit. The adjustable bar that the springs are attached to is nearly to the top of its screwable range....So what if I switch to .10s for example?? or to harder .09? Would I have to install extra springs? or what? The bridge is Edge Pro, on a 2570RG. Anyone else have similar quirks?

Re: strings

If you're talking about the trem claw, and that its almost screwed all the way to the end of the trem cavity, I doubt you would have to add more springs if you went up a little in gauge. If you made a big change maybe.

One quick thing to do to increase tension on the Trem Block is to turn the parallel springs to arrow - instead of:

| | | Try this: / | \

where the "arrowhead" is pointing to the claw. This should give more tension without having to add another spring

Re: strings

What does /|\ do to the tone or the playability? Anyone here using this setup? Like I said The guitar is playable as it is now, but Im just irritated at the weird angle on the trem claw and a little bit nervous about how this
is reflected on the string tension.
