To trade or not?

Right, well I bought an RG8670 off of here about 8 months ago. It's beautiful, plays well, stays in tune, not really any complaints about it, except for the fact that I'm scared to death of taking it ANYWHERE but my house and dinging/damaging it. I've been thinking of selling it/ trading it for something that I wouldn't be concerned about. Every time I so much as 'touch' it on something else, I'm paranoid about damaging it. I *could* save up and get a 550, but then I wouldn't play the 8670... and that kinda seems like sacrelige lol. Anyway, I'd like to hear some other points of view, from people who have had similar experiences. Thanks, people!

Re: To trade or not?

Just play it.

It's meant to be played, would you rather stare at it? It will get dinged eventually, dings add character anyway.

You could save up slowly for an RG, I bought an RGA which I play around the house a lot, my Jem has a ding too which I freaked out about at first but I'm not too concerned now as I know i'll never sell it.

Re: To trade or not?

I have the exact same problem with my J Custom. But I have made a decision that I will make it a collectible item instead. I would probably get another guitar, Ibanez RG1570, and make it my main axe. Would change all the pups and probably play her without any tender loving care. I would however, keep my J Custom as I think it makes a good collectible. Who knows within 6-10 years time, you could make good money out of it?

dings and dents will happen and it's almost inevitable. If you love the guitar why would you sell it in the future anyway, so you don't have to worry about a few dings affecting value. Another thing is to change the way you handle your guitars, I make sure I'm absolutely aware of my surroundings, never grab the guitar without the best grip possible and most of all put it in it's case or stand when your not using it. Dinging it while moving around will most likely eventually happen, but it'll really kill you if you lean it against something and come home to find a fallen guitar (or hear it crash from another room). Hope you stick with it, I've seen a few and they're great guitars.

Re: To trade or not?

If you like the guitar play it. I got no problems taking my RG8670 out to play as I'm not worried about it getting dinged or not. Sooner or later it's bound to happen. I've already bastardized/customized all my guitars(including my J-Customs) so they would play better. If you're worried about 'value' then just buy don't touch the thing and forget that you own it.

Hmmm yeah I think she's definately a keeper; just needs less 'tame' pickups. Maybe some Evos!

buddroyce, what did you do to your guitars? I'm interested...

Re: To trade or not?

***ALL* of my guitars had thier necks stripped down to the bare wood as all of them come with a light amount of finishing/lacquer on it(they are all oiled now, including my neck-through JCRG-2 which was harder to strip down as I wanted to maintain that gradual fade in the neck. I also did a minor bit of neck shaping on my RG1880s as well.) Aside from that they all have ESP Arming Adjusters installed in them(it's a good thing I bought a large bulk load from Japan), that and I also replaced the tone circuit with a mid-cut circuit as well swap out the VLX-91 switches on the guitars for CRL switches that I modifed to be super smooth(I only use positions 1 & 5 so I just want to whack the switch with my pinky and wanted a super smooth switch with very little resistance when you switch the positions.. it sucks if you like using positions 2, 3 or 4 as it's a little too smooth)

(I also swapped in a new Violet-Chrome Edge-Pro on my RG8670-TV as the chrome on the old one started to peel and poke against my hand. I initially wanted gold, but I figured the Violet chrome was still a little different).

Well I've already had pics of my guitars posted here before(somewhere), unless you folks seriously want pictures of the wiring on my guitars(in which case it's really a spaghetti mess of wires), that and a stripped down neck still looks like a normal neck. Cosmetically, all my guitars look stock(except for the dings).

Take a flat head screw driver, now carefully carve your intials into the top of the guitar just below the bridge. Resist the urge to plung screwdriver into chest.... Now play your guitar without worry of dinging or scratching it. The guitar will now bring you much more pleasure than it ever would have just sitting in a case.

I think there are two kind of people:

1) Players
2) Collectors

Notice which I put at #1.

Seriously though, if you bought it to play it, who cares about dings? Dings only matter if you are going to sell it. And even then they only really matter if it is a collectible guitar; otherwise it makes little difference.

Stevie Ray Vaughn's guitar was beat to hell but that didn't stop it from being a playing machine.
