Tone Zone Issue

I have an Rg 3120. Beautiful guitar but with the Tone zone, it has so much mids and bass that I couldn't stand it even after EQing. I really tried liking the pickup but to no avail. A lot of people here love the pickup and I'm beginning to think that something is wrong with me. I play rock to metal and even some shred and I just don't like the sound. I'm thinking of replacing the pickup on the guitar with a Bill Lawrence 500xl. Maybe the Tonezone would sound better with a basswood body. What do you guys think?

Re: Tone Zone Issue

Yeah, a ToneZone would be too much in a mahagony bodied guitar, I think.

Try a JB or Duncan Distortion or a 500XL too.

I have a tone zone in my J Custom and I think it's an awesome pup...and the guitar is a mahogany body too. It's ok if you don't like it, not everyone has the same taste.

Re: Tone Zone Issue

I love 'em in my two mahogany JC's, they sound awesome through my Recto half stack !! Sort of Gary Moore meets Satch. If you have the gain too high though, they sound muddy and lack definition. Make sure they're 2-3 mm from the strings when depressed at the last fret too, to get more bite.

Re: Tone Zone Issue

I seriuosly don't think a guitar bodywood makes any difference at all. I've got a les paul rolling into the store the other day which is equipped with a Paf pro and it sounded the same with my RG.

Re: Tone Zone Issue

Go for the X2N. I have a Tone Zone in the neck and its great for that bassy sound.

Re: Tone Zone Issue

I just put an Air Norton in the neck slot on a new RG and it is fantastic! Very clean.

i disagree, i think they can have stunning differences at times and it's a pretty highlighted fact throughout guitar history..

have you ever noticed the 'spank' of a maple fretboard?
if that can come through then a body wood will come through too.. experiment more and you'll notice it..
but lots of gain will hide the wood.

Very true, and since I'm heavily distorted 99% of the time, the wood my guitars are made of doesn't really matter to me. As long as it's not plywood or something like it lol...

Re: Tone Zone Issue

Interesting thread.....I remember reading somewhere that when matching pickups to bodywood, the limitations of the wood shouldn't be exposed. At the other end of the EQ spectrum; ever try a Seymour JB in maple? I did (or I should say that my Lado came that way), and it failed...big time.

Cheers

Re: Tone Zone Issue

I keep the Tone Zone at about 3/16" below the strings at the bridge.
