USA Custom Headstock confusion

Hi,

I searched the whole forum but i didnt find an appropriate answer.
Do all early 90s USA Custom RGs have the USA custom logo or are there models
with the common black Ibanez headstock w/o the US logo?

Thanks!

Kind regards,

Flo

There are two types of USA Custom logos. One that is like the J Custom logo with the words USA CUSTOM above the Ibanez logo. The other is the older USA Custom logo where it's just the regular ibanez logo but the words "USA CUSTOM" are at the tip like the regular models.

Re: USA Custom Headstock confusion

I had a very early USA custom, the lizard finish that did not have the USA Custom logo on the headstock. The printing on the neck joint and on the back of the neck confirmed that it was original, so IMHO, the answer is no, not all of them had USA Custom on the headstock.

Re: USA Custom Headstock confusion

I would suggest that if it doesn't say USA Custom, but clearly IS a USAC because of the graphic or whatever, then it is likely a replacement neck. I have a couple of prototype 1 of 1 USACs, and even they have the USAC logo. The neck stamping should be production stamps, as the necks were off the shelf necks with "USA Custom" added to them (except maybe the block or offset dot inlay necks). It's always possible that one slipped past without getting silkscreened USAC, but you'd have a hard time proving it, I think.

More specifically to answer your original question, there were no USAC's that were intended to be produced without the USAC logo.

I'm not sure about this either..

My '89 USA custom 'predator' has large USA custom logo , no checkmark ( like J custom).
meanwhile
My '90 USA custom ' golden feline' has check mark Ibanez logo, with small logo' usa custom' at the edge of the headstok ( like ' RG series').

So, I guess.... maybe at that time, we can order the logo the way we want it.

Yeah, but those both at least have one or the other of the USAC logos. I thought the question was if you could get a USAC that DIDN'T say "USA Custom" somewhere on the headstock. There was a time where they were transitioning from the old "check" USAC logo to the later gold large USAC logo where there didn't seem to be any rhyme or reason as to which logo you'd get. I don't think you got to choose the logo. Most commonly, you get the silver logo with square heel necks, and gold with AANJ, but I own several guitars that are the other way around, so there are no absolutes.

Never trust a catalog shot! But like I said, there are no absolutes. It wouldn't surprise me if some made it out without USAC logos, but if I'm buying one, it better have the logo or I will assume it's a replacement neck.

Re: USA Custom Headstock confusion

alb5150 - Welcome to the forum! To answer your question...

It just depends on the specific guitar. Like the graphics - some of the designs are more rare and will sell for a lot more money. Some graphics are more visually appealing and will also sell for more money. The Exotic Woods guitars also do pretty well, price-wise. It's hard to give an overall price for USACs, but they can range anywhere from $500 to $1500 (or more!), depending on rarity, condition, and how motivated the buyer is!

If you've got a specific model you're interested in, let me know. I've been tracking prices of USAC's for several years now. I can at least give you that history.
