about the "S" and "used" stamp...

I've been over this guitar with a fine tooth comb (metaphorically speaking, of course - I wouldn't want to scratch the finish) and the only "flaw" I can find is on the back of the headstock where a small plaque that was once slightly inset into the wood has obviously been removed. The serial # "sticker" sits there now. The mark is just a small rectangular indentation with some dried glue residue in it where I presume something was once set - don't have any idea what. Other than that, the hardware seems fine, the finish is beautiful (much better than on my Gibson Blueshawk), so I have no idea why the "S" designation.

Zabitha, do you have this rectangular indent in the back of your headstock? Is your serial number on a sticker?

Maybe Glen's right - maybe Ibanez did it when liquidating remaining stocks after they were discontinued...

Ya, both my USRG's have the rectangular indentation, but only one has a sticker serial number and only that one has the "S" and the word "USED" stamped on the back!

Tha rectangluar square may be from a serial number plate, as is found on some of the original 80's RGs.

I learned something else interesting about USRG10s today... When first introduced, they had a MSRP of $1299, as compared to the $1499 USRG20 and $1699 USRG30. But in 1996 and 1997 the price had jumped to $1699, same as the USRG30, while the USRG20 remained at $1499... I can't figure why, unless it had something to do with better grade of maple for the tops, or a reduced hardware spec for the USRG20... This price difference was confirmed in four different price guides over two years, so it would seem unlikely that it was just a typo. Jimi--

Sweet axe! That is one of the coolest quilted tops I've ever seen in my life. I can only imagine how dangerous it sounds with the strings through the body.

It's interesting that your USRG10 has a bound fretboard, when (in most cases) only the USRG30's had a bound neck!

* I'd need to see the official dealer price lists for 100% confirmation but I'd bet that is a TYPO and mis-identified guitar. I say that because in '97 timeframe i got new prices from WMC for a USRG10 and the price was about $745. I'll look for the fax quote this week. The guides seem to be getting the 10 and 30 confused. The 10/20 were phased out for the final year of production leaving only the 'prestige' USRG30... glen

Just an update concerning the back of the headstock - The back of the headstock on the USRG30 I just got doesn't have the "S" designation. *The only imprint on the back of the headstock is "USA9006 0013."

ooh... you've got a real serial number...

I don't know about this whole "S" thing. It kind of bugged me for a while - I kept thinking that there must be something wrong with the guitar and I just can't find it *But I've been over this axe like five times in the finest detail - I mean with bright lights and holding it inches away from my nose! - and there is just absolutely nothing wrong with it. Endorsee guitar? end of line blow out? returned guitar that was ordered direct? I dunno... but it ain't a "flawed" guitar.
