Which one..

I have the choice of either getting an RG1570 in Mirage Blue, the older one without the 5-piece neck, or a brown RG520QS. Which one would you choose? I like playing everything from Metallica to Steve Vai. This will be my first RG so I really don't know which one would be better, I know the Prestige line is very nice but I played the 520 and I really liked the neck on it.

Thanks in advance!

I would have the 520QS personally.

Mahogany body, Lo Pro (or Edge) trem, wizard neck.

You can't go wrong with either, but that is my choice.

You played both and liked the 520? Get it - they're both good guitars.

I haven't got a chance to play the 1570 yet, the person I might be buying it from is out of town on business right now. I do like the fact that the 520 has the original Edge and the Wizard neck, but I really just don't like mahogany, the tone is a little too bassy for me.

Re: Which one..

Mahogany is known to be brighter than the basswood in the 1570.

Could be pickups/amp settings. I would go for the 520.

I would say the mahogany is fatter sounding myself. I have sold most of my basswood RG's in favor of mahogany models. Right now I have an RG3120, J-Custom 8570 and RG620BM-SOL(solid mahogany, burled top, satin oil finish) and love them. I also have a 2550 mutt with a Breed in the bridge that sounds really good but for sweet tone, the mahogany bodies rule.
