Anybody ever notice?

I recently bought the Joe Satriani Live in San Fransisco DVD. I know it's a bit old but has anyone ever noticed that one of his JSs has Seymour Duncans in it?

You can see them when the shot zooms in both pickups say "Seymour Duncan," on them just like every SD model. It was recorded in 2001 so it was after his deal with DiMarzio obviously.

Anyone else see this? Anyone know why? Anyone know what they were?

Yup, it's his old chromeboy called Pearly. Named after the Pearly Gates pickups by Seymour Duncan. I believe this is one of his guitars that got stolen.

If I recall correctly, he tried those pickups on the guitar and liked the sound so much he decided to keep them. I think that was also the first chromeboy done...again, not entirely sure. Someone else might be able to correct this part.

I see. I love it when you catch guitarists using something they don't endorse or what ever, because it goes to show you that anything can be ued not just the brand they are on the pay roll of.

"Pearly Gates" I have 'em loaded in my Strat (stock actually)...Although I recently swapped the bridge out for Super Distortion. Nice pickups though.

I am guessing that they were a cleaner pickup than the Super Distortion you're using now?

Can you help me out here and explain a few differences you've noticed since you've used both?

Re: Anybody ever notice?

Yeah, Pearly got stolen, but he has had Duncans in some other guitars too.

I find the Super Distortion to be cleaner and more defined actually, and a bit hotter which is what I was after.

Here's a description of Pearly Gates straight from Duncan's site...

"application
Warm, slightly-hotter-than-vintage humbucker. Great for blues, classic rock, southern rock, jam, and hard rock.

description
Originally designed as a recreation of the pickups in the '59 Les PaulŪ Standard that defined the raw, rebellious sound of Texas blues-rock. The Pearly Gates is sweet, but slightly rude, with great sustain and a bright top end that make harmonics jump out of the guitar. Comes with four-conductor hookup cable."

I didn't find the sustain or harmonics all that great in the bridge position of my Strat which is why I switched. Still, I think the Pearly Gates are nice pickups. This one just didn't do it for me in the Strat.

I saw George Lynch at a NAMM show in '05 and he was using a beat to sh!t Tele (looked like it was dragged behind a car down a dirt road) that he had wrote ESP on a piece of paper and taped over he Fender logo for the show. I found it quite humorous.
