Buying a used JS100

Hi!

I've found a couple of ads with the black JS100 on sale. Both like new and with a price tag that is half of what the shop wants for it new.

I've played the model in shops a number of times and I quite like it. Since I don't play in a band at the moment I don't fancy splashing out for the high-end models like JS1000 or JS1200.

Thing is - I don't have much knowledge about what to look for when inspecting a used guitar. Is there anything specific I should ask or look for on that model?

Kind regards,
Hans Petter

Well for starters make sure the electronics work. Plug it in and play it, try all the switches, coil taps..etc. Ask what modifications have been made to it. Look at the frets and see if any wear has occurred.. Check for neck warping. Just make sure it plays like you think it should.

Thanks moebius! I'll give it a test tomorrow and hopefully I'll be satisfied enough to add a JS to my guitar family

The photo looks like the Edge Pro II bridge. If that's true, an Edge Pro should drop right in as a nice upgrade later on. You may want to upgrade pickups as well but these are great guitars and well worth the upgrades when time/money permit. BTW, the switches on these are cheap and prone to failure but a new switch is a simple and cheap repair.

Re: Buying a used JS100

Yeah, I might do that at some point.
Also I noticed that the tone dies on certain frets, mostly on the B strings 15th and 17th frets. Any ideas what can be the cause?

Not sure what you mean by "tone dies." Can you elaborate?

Re: Buying a used JS100

I'll try, though I'm not sure what the problem is called in English.
When I play certain frets the sound is buzzing, especcially when i bend the B-string on the 17th fret. Then the tone sound just mutes. All I get is a tweaking sound that doesn't hold at all. This doesn't happen when I bend the string at the 16th or 18th fret and there's no visible damage on the fretboard.

Re: Buying a used JS100

Sounds like perhaps those particular frets are a little low, causing fret buzz.

Can it be fixed? If so - how?

Re: Buying a used JS100

Take it to someone for a Setup and it may need a Fret Dress which will remove any high frets if they are really bad.
