Crack in a JS1000

Hi.

I recently bought a JS1000 that was new in february of this year. It plays wonderfully, seems technically sound, it has been refinished by the previous owner.

Problem is there's a crack developing at a terrifying rate. I've enclosed an image to demonstrate it's location. I had to draw in the crack (yellow line) because it just would not photograph. It's grown about 1cm today. I've had the bridge off and it doesn't seem to extend down into the routing at all, and I'm pretty certain it's just in the finish.



So really I'm wondering if anyone has seen a crack like this before ( I know they occur in the neck, but this is new to me ) and should I be panicking now (because I'm starting too anyway ).

Looks like it's just in the clearcoat, if you can hardly see it I wouldn't worry too much, I think eventually it won't be able to get any longer.

Someone will probably have some tips on what to do.

And yes get some more pics Looks like a cool Donnie finish.

Well I don't want to wonder too much off my own topic re: crack, but as requested here's a bigger pic. The flash makes it a bit brighter than it really is, it's kind of Vai does Donnie I guess :-p

By the look of it i would say the paint is very thick because theres lots of paint under the clear including the original paint work the guitar had,

maybe this is why it cracked? - if paint is very thick as in your guitars custom paint job- going from rappid hot to cold temp will cause it to crack
(eg- a very hot day into a cold night after a gig?) it also could be that the type of paint that was used to refinish the guitar was harder than the original paint job the guitar had & dryed faster causing a tighter harder top choat surface tention - ( ask SCS on jemsite he would know a good cure for the crack in the paint)

Thanks for all your comments. I'm pretty certain the original finish was removed first. The guitar has just travelled 100 miles to a new home so I guess environmental changes should be considered, my concern was that the crack comes out from a corner like that indicating some sort of stress fracture. My guess is probably that I've used the whammy a bit more than it's used before and while the wood itself is fine, it's stressing the clearcoat on top.

I guess I just need to keep watching and wait for it to stop growing I find the artwork really makes me want to sit down and play But the crack distracts from my enjoyment of it a little. Can't see it half the time but I know it's there hehe.

By the looks of it, the trem has also been replaced, the LoPro (or perhaps Edge) that should've been in there, does not have those metal bridge chips. From the logo, it appears to have been replaced by an Edge Pro.

This may not actually fit, causing the trem to hit the finish when doing pull-ups.

JS1000/1200 comes with an Edge Pro these days, http://www.imuso.co.uk/ProductDetail...ckCode=EG00125 , I don't think it's been replaced. The trem does sit very close, but I've dived and pulled the trem full travel with a thin piece of paper in the gap and the paper is unnaffected and free to move, it is tight though admittedly. Not very technical probably but hey :-)

ow ok, I just figured it was way older than the EdgePro, by the looks of the frets & fretboard I had guessed it was at least 10years old

Haha - yeah I almost retook the photo after I saw that. The neck is actually in as-new condition, it just caught the camera flash full on and whited out :-p
