Custom Donnie Hunt!

Well, a couple of months ago I bought a 1987 540R from marianozz.

The guitar had mariano's signature neck refinish (he sanded the neck and finished it with tung oil and it feels PERFECT).
But the guitar was repainted by some previous owner with an awfull trans green, so decided to make a custom "finish" by wrapping it in aluminum paper.

I think it looked kinda cool, but I though it would be cool to make a JS3 replica. Its being done by the same guys that made the Zakk Wylde Rebel Les Paul replica I have and the flare 7 string JPM I have.

The routing on the guitar also had to be redone (to make it an H-H and to allow for a double action edge -since the 1987 routing does not allow for proper double action-).

A little bit of the guitar was done as a sample, just to see if I was pleased with the work. It's not finished, it lacks colours and more details in the "drawing", they wanted my conformity before proceeding with all the work.

Well, it is at a very early stage, and I only have one pic of the ongoing process, but I wanted to share it with you. Enough talk, here it is:

I havent decide on the pups colours yet. I have a couple of humbuckers (the original Di Marzio IBZ, and an IBanez QM2), but I may just spend some extra bucks and go with a purple Tone Zone (or Super 3) and blue Paf Pro.

It looks great! Definetly one of the better JS3 replicas I've seen.

Do you perhaps have a pic of when the guitar was wrapped in aluminum foil? That would be pretty cool to see!

I dont have any at hand, but I ll post or send you some later. Im glad you like it.

Back to the Donnie, as I said, it is just a preview sample, but I think it will end up looking pretty good. BTW, I forgot to tell, but it will have a matching headstock!

A matching headstock... That could be interesting. Kind of like the guitar Joe Satriani uses for 'Up in flames'.

I can't wait for more pics!

You should have them paint the pickups to match the graphics on the guitar, that would look really cool.

Re: Custom Donnie Hunt!

I though about it, but I think that in busy finishes as the multicolours or this one, the pups are what keep the guitar looking "kind of" familiar. I think a purple and a blue pup will do the job. May be, if I found them, I could go with 2 tone pups (black/purple and white/blue), but those kind of items are very hard to find. I though about doing little faces as inlays also, but I think it will take too long and it will cost too much.

The fact that it will hace a matching headstock and 2 colour "matching" pups is already going to make it look daring.

Well, having the pups match the paint scheme shouldn't cost that much, the guy will only have to continue the pattern on the pickups once the guitar is finished but leaving them black would work too. I think it would make the guitar cool nonetheless.

Re: Custom Donnie Hunt!

Yeah I ve been at that store about a week ago and they had them. I woulnt mind putting a couple of evos either.

Im going to wait and see how its coming out before I choose the pup colours.

I wonder how purple and blue strat knobs would fit.... in any case, this things are minor details.

I think I ll have more pics in a week or 2. I believe I will have the finished guitar in 3 or 4 weeks. I ll keep posting them as I get them.

It does look pretty similar to the original. Most of the replicas are done with airbrushing which, even though ti looks a lot "tidier" than the original JS3 it is not how the Donnies were painted.

Here is are a couple of pics of an original Donnie:

Hey RCB, the second pic, is that the original Donnie???? I'm assuming those folks that are doing the drawings are in Argentina???? I'd like to do that to a second hand JS1000. How much are they charging you to do the paint job on it???

Saludos
