Donnie replicas - are they illegal?

I've replied to a post in the tech section, but noone answered it.
I've seen and heard about several donnie replicas. I've seen them on
evilbay and such. Heard of Herc too.
My question is: is there anything illegal with making a
donnie replica and selling it. Is there even copyrights for donnies
design?
And what about companies that make replacement bodies for
Js, Jem, or Ibanez guitars? Are they not taking someones idea
and using that to make money?? Is this not legal?

Check out the thread below with the title ""Donnie" almost done" it touched on the copyright issue.

As far as I understand it, the Donnie design is definitely copyrighted, as is all artwork once it has been created. You would have to significantly change the design to avoid copyright issues. This is assuming you are selling the item once you have made a copy.

Anyway, do a search for "copyright" and it should turn up a few messages.

Just gives me a chance to answer.

Donnie would own the rights, Donnie is dead. Whoever the rights passed too now owns them, probably his family since he obviously didn't have children. Donnie and his family were estranged, he was openly ***, they are from Lubbock Texas, you do the math. Bottom line, whoever has the rights isn't following what's going on.
