Edge Pro on JS1000

Hi everyone

I've just bought a JS1000BTB; great guitar but before I made the purchase I was warned by the guitar tech that the Edge Pro has been the subject of a few tuning problems.

He said that on some Ibanez guitars with this trem, tuning problems have arisen due to the springs weakening (He gave me a much more detailed explanation as to why this occurred but due to my short attention span I've forgotten).

Has anyone else had any problems with the edge pro, tuning or otherwise?

Cheers

In my personal experience, I never had ANY issues with it. I recommend taking it in for a pro setup. You shouldn't have anything to worry about though.

Take a look at ibanezrules.com (banner up top as well) for some good info.

Re: Edge Pro on JS1000

most tuning problems with locking trems are mostly due to not stretching the stings when tuning the guitar.....you have to stretch them, and retune, until they dont go out of tune anymore. Also make sure the set screws in the trem posts are locked so the posts don't move, also make sure the screws on the nut pads are tight to prevent the strings from sliding under them when using raising/diving the whammy bar, as well as the saddles..

If you've done that, and it still goes out of tune, it is worth having a pro setup. The intonation could be off.

This is an Edge Pro, so it doesn't have locking studs. But with a good setup, fully stretched strings, and possibly a locking stud modification (if needed), you won't have any tuning problems at all.

Rich has talked about something like this, but this happens on any new guitar, not just ibanez. Ive seen and had to fix this on custom shop strats, jackson, bcrichs, peavey, pretty much anything with a floating tremolo and springs. Just give them some work over so they develop memory and voila. If the springs still give you issues buy a new set they are cheap anwyays

Mine is the cheap ibanez . i think only on sale here in Malaysia it's called gio ibanez . Something like squier to the mother brand fender. The ILT1 (Ibanez Locking Tremolo) work so well it doesn;t goes out of tune. Well of course the edge pro should be better. Actually it's all how you setup the string and all. Yeah you have to stretch the string first

I'm from Malaysia too, I have a JS1000WH 2001 model with the Lo-Pro. From reviews from my frens too (who have ibanez's with edge pro's), they sed if u get a good pro set up it should be fine. And make sure u change the springs every few years. Mine need a change, mine has been super stable since i bought it but now its going off and on, so i need a new set.. so yea, it's all about the springs and the set up. Make sure you get a really really good technician that knows his ibanez's well =) Well i get mine a pro set up every 3-5 months and my guitar is NEVER problematic.Tuning is stable no matter how i abuse the trem. Change ur strings often too. Maybe 2 weeks once, at least i do that

Re: Edge Pro on JS1000

You guys are all whacked.

Springs last for a decade or more. They only need to be changed once they become fatigued enough that they aren't strong enough to hold the tension. Springs can be a little stiff at first because they have a memory, some vigorous bar action will loosen them up and break the memory.

Very very rarely a spring will go bad and induce a different tension everytime it's opened. Ultra rare, and I've never seen one that wasn't at least a decade old.

Re: Edge Pro on JS1000

Cheers for the response.

Yeah it does need to be set-up properly and under the terms of the purchase it will get one, but I was thinking long term.

I'll seek a better explantion of the tuning problems associated with this trem when I take it back for its set-up, but its reassuring to know the majority of you haven't had any trouble. The person who told me this is a reputable guitar-tech though and I've known him for years.

On a different subject I'd just like to say parting with £1100 was the most painful thing I've ever had to do!

Same here. I did the locking stud mod which was real easy for safekeeping on my Jem (if you can do a etup you can do it yourself!!!!!).

As for springs weakening - ALL springs weaken over time. Most the trem springs you get are the exact same these days as well. There are a couple odd ball ones that are different - like on my old G&L the springs are strong - 3 springs hold 11s and I have enough left that I would be they would hold 12s too!

Well, that £1100 was worth it because you made a good investment in buying one of the very few 'really' versatile instruments that ibanez have to offer.. The JS1000 =) Cheers. Enjoy that axe mate. Was a good investment.
