Re: Guitar Guru Chrome Boy

Like Rich said, the only way to effectively chrome something like a guitar is flooding it with silver oxide. I've talked to bodyshops before about the Alsa MirraChrome and to get the best results, it has to be sprayed black first.

Chroming things is actually not that expensive and vendors are not that hard to find. Think about the interior of a car. Door handles and other bits are often nothing more than chromed plastic. I spoke once with one of these vendors about chroming the instrument surround from one of my cars. It was only going to be about $150 but the person I spoke with said the trick to the whole thing is that the surface has to be utterly smooth before it's chromed. Any scratches would show through in the final product. Her suggestion was to have the part painted first and buffed to a mirror shine before they chromed it.

Wood actually isn't a very good material for building musical instruments out of.

I think only tradition has made it last so long (and maybe cost)

err, i wouldn't go as far as to say it isn't very good. maybe there's some weird, expensive compounds that might sound better/different, but wood is and will be a classic forever.

Re: Guitar Guru Chrome Boy

Plastic parts are different.. They use a process called vacuum metalizing. You can't do that on a guitar body.

Re: Guitar Guru Chrome Boy

I think, after read the whole thread 3 times, that the problem is only in the four-words title :
Do not call a guitar a Chrome Boy when it's not a Chrome Boy

It could be better or worse, it's just something else.

Personnaly, I like much this work even it's not the most chromish chrome !!!
We all know the extreme difficulty of that challenge, and let GG work being a GG work

GG : find another name for your work (may I suggest Chrome Guru) - you'll keep all the credit you merit

sorry, my English is bad - so let me know if something is incomprehensible or litigious

Wow! I'm on their site trying to buy chrome in a spraycan. so far all I can find is product that requires pro equipment to apply. This is a great result IMO for a do-it-yourselfer.

That's why I charge what I charge. It's a very tricky process. They're going to tell you it's easy. It's not, and I can't even imagine doing it with a spray can.

The only process I've seen that really looks right is the one where you flow silver oxide [I think] that deposits the silver on the surface, and you clear to protect.
Rich dixit!
