Re: Guitar Guru Chrome Boy

You guys all fail at this. See the best route to go is taking a big slab of metal (around 150 pounds) CNC or whatever the hell you need to do to make the body, then chrome it up. Sure it may weight a quarter of a ton, but hey... its chrome!

Haha

Just tugging your leg...

GG chrome is durable... so its the way to go.

Nice guitar. (MAKE ME A CHROME JEM!)

It's sorta been done in a way in the past. There was a solid brass one made by Ibanez quite some time ago. It's in the Ibanez History book somewhere. Even a picture someone holding it and straining to stand up with it...lol

As far as i know best metallic paints are alclads.
And easiest way is using ultra bright bare metal foil.

Re: Guitar Guru Chrome Boy

Just from personal experience - I like Coat of Chrome (Don).

http://coatofchrome.com/page6.php

He did a JS100 for me - and it was superb!!! (I sold it here - I forget who bought it, but if they see this post, maybe they can respond)

I think it may be CosmiChrome - but in either case, outside of the slight yellow tone of the CB or Blue of Real Chrome, it was pretty close.

A little pricey when compared to Alsa (Almost twice as much to have someone else do it), but at the end of the day, you get what you pay for : )

Just my $0.02

I have two coat of chrome guitars, a 1990 JS1 and a JS1600. They look unbelievably close to chrome. You can only tell the difference in direct sunlight. The difference is that you have a wood guitar that sounds much better than the JS10ths do.

Don uses a deposition of silver to get his mirror finish.

Re: Guitar Guru Chrome Boy

The original chromes (JS2) were wood with chrome outside. The JS10ths are Luthite with Chrome on the outside. The JS2 PRMs are wood inside stainless steel outside. I'm talking about wood guitars with a silver outside that were done after market

The only process I've seen that really looks right is the one where you flow silver oxide [I think] that deposits the silver on the surface, and you clear to protect.

lol im lovin the paintjob, and the DNA painting on the wall

the chrome plating process does not use molten chrome. the piece to be chromed has to be conductive. this means either it is metal or has a conductive coating applied to it. then the first step is to plate it with copper. this is done by dipping it in a solution with copper dissolved in it. the copper is drawn to the piece by electric charge. then it is plated with nickel and last chrome all in the same manner. they probably had trouble plating wood because the body would float in the solution and have to be weighted down, and it might have had a tendency to soak in the solution to anywhere there was no conductive coating. any holes would be a problem. plastic is chromed all the time, with a lot of plastic chrome parts on cars. there are a few places that will attempt to chrome wood but they won't guarantee their work because you just can't tell if they will come out nice. and it can get expensive. you pretty much have to send the body to them completely smooth with the conductive paint already on it.

Nice work. He specializes in Chroming, I specialize in guitars. I don't know how well it will last, or what it does to the sound. It is what it is. What does he charge?

His prices aren't bad. he quoted me $500 a while back for chroming a JS1000 including the headstock.

I know he's refinished a 10th before that was sold on the bay. From the pictures I saw, it came out pretty decent.

Re: Guitar Guru Chrome Boy

Yeah, he quoted the same for me. I was considering doing a JS600 body. Just too much for me to pull the trigger on, considering cost of parts and my funds. Quality of work looks great. He replied to email really quick and seemed like a real good guy to deal with.

On the subject of non wood guitars, I played a talbo with 85's in it for about 5 years.... A combinAtion that should have been sterile, but had fantastic tone...

Apparently made from the same aluminium they used in honda engine blocks!
