How many JS-7's are out there?

I watched the Satch live webcast last night and enjoyed it very much!
I noticed he has a few JS-7 prototypes. How many do you think are out
there?

I think it's something like two. He has the red one and an oiled one.

There are at least 3 of them, maybe 4. The newest one is the red one. Then there are the oliled ones, one has Joe, one has got his rhytm player. On the oiled one, you can see more sharp edges around horns, it is the first JS7 I think. And then I am not sure if he's got another oiled J7 with smoother edges like on regular JS body.

Re: How many JS-7's are out there?

In late '01, I saw the oiled one. Then in '02 I saw 2 oiled ones. 1 for Satch and the other for his rhythm guitarist. Now he has a red one. So thats 3.
I was just wonderin' maybe there might be a couple or few more.
Does he have a Fred 7 and a Paf Joe 7 for pickups?

Re: How many JS-7's are out there?

I'm pretty sure there's three.

There's his initial prototype, with it's unusually boxy contours. This was his first JS7, and is the one he's seen photographed with the most (not because he lays it the most, I think, but because people took a lot of pictures of "Joe with his new seven string). I think this was something of a quick "proof of concept" model, and that the rougher radiusing reflects this.

Then, about six months after that, you began to see Joe with a properly rounded JS7. One of two things could have happened - either the Ibanez custom shop touched up the profile, or he had a second one built. I remember catching Satch on the DT/Kings' X tour, and not being sure if his rhythm guitarist was playing a JS7 or a 2027, and I remember working it out by the end of the night, but I can't for the life of me remember what I concluded, lol. I think it must have been a JS, as the VV finish wou;d have been pretty distinctive, even as far back as I was...

And then there's the red one. Unless he's had a new one built in the last six months (and unless you want to count his UV, from the Crystal Planet sessions), that's it.

I know he's got a custom Fred7 in his JS7's (they mentioned it on the Dimarzio site briefly, as I recall), but as for a PAF Joe... You know, the timing is about right so that his neck pickup could have been a custom wound PAF Pro that they tweaked slightly, and Joe said, "Hey, I like this, could you make me one for my six?" Just idle speculation, but like I said, the timing was right.

Anyone know for sure what the red one was made of? Odds are mahogany, but Joe typically plays basswood, and his JS prototype rich picked up was alder... It's strange.

Re: How many JS-7's are out there?

I thought the 2 oiled were mahogany. I could be wrong. Your right Joe plays basswood so is his red one basswood?

So he does have a Fred 7. I would think that DiMarzio would've made him a Paf Joe 7 along with the Fred 7 now that I think about it.
It seems right for the JS-7.

Its definately an attractive 7-string as to where I would prefer it over the Saber anyday.

The two natural finish ones are mahogany, no question. The red one is anyone's guess.

Re: How many JS-7's are out there?

The red one looks like the transparent red finish over a fairly dark wood, so it probably is mahogany like the others. Joe would certainly want them to be the same, I would think. Remember that he wouldn't use them on tour without having a backup. Maybe the natural finish one is the backup for the red one, but I wouldn't be suprised if he still had the original square one hanging around somewhere too.

Now if we can't get Ibanez to make the JS7 a production model, maybe we could get DiMarzio to make the pickups so we can build our own custom JS7s. (I won't hold my breath.)

Great idea. How about bringing the Radius back? Then we could at least have
a radius 7-string. A JS-7 would be better though.

Im thinking that a Fred 7 would sound great.

I've got some good close-ups from his in-store appearance at Daddy's in Boston - I'll take a look. For some reason, I'm pretty sure it was a solid color.

Re: How many JS-7's are out there?

About 1.5-2 years ago I saw Satch in Heineken Music Hall in Amsterdam, and he was playing his JS-7 in CA coloring to match his JS1200 CA. Was awesome looking guitar. He did 1-2 songs with it, remarking the 7 was still confusing him.

;-)

It inspired me to build my own JS-7.....well more like Radius-7 copy. I'm coming along nicely and in month of two will be ready for painting. CA of course.
