How to make chrome? - Is it possible?

Hi!

I'm planning to make my "own" cutom guitar. And I'm almost at the end, so the only thing missing is the finish.. I want to make it as the Chrome Boy, but I've heard that it was the worst thing Ibanez ever have done, so now I wonder wheter I should go for a chrome finsh, or just throw the idea in the *toilet*? Anyone know to make the chrome as it were done on the ->JS10th?

I agree. It looks great new....well not even, the 10th could come with many flaws. It's not a matter of a perfect finish, it's which one that has the least amount of imperfections. In addition to that, it scratches easily and if you don't like finger prints, it's not for you.....oh yeah and don't polish it, you will just make it worse!

Take Rich's advice, or buy a player 10th.

It's not even close to a real chrome finish, but I've seen epoxy based "chrome" spray paint. If you get the primer smooth enough it might look halfway decent. you'd probably want to do a test run on some scrap or a junk body...

FWIW,

satch

if your guitar is made of wood, chrome is a no go. the JS10 was made out of composite material.... the wood breathes which causes it to expand/contract... chrome doesn't like this, and cracks when it happens. if you look at joe's chromeboy, it has a great big piece of clear tape across the front where the chrome is flaking (he has a basswood bodied chromeboy.. hence the problem).

i'd pass on the chrome. if you ever figure out a way and you get it looking just right, you'll never want to pick it up for a play... so it kind of defeats the prupose of a guitar doesn't it?

Well I could help you chrome the headstock. My friend from the Ibanez factory here in Japan handed me a handful of chrome stickers that go over your headstock. Supposedly it's something there just experimenting with at the factory, but I really don't see it being successful at all since the one I put on my JS700 is slowly coming off. Take a look at the pick of my 700 I posted a while ago. I was suprised no one asked me why my headstock was so shiny!! later

Can you post a pic of the 700? I thought it was the blue and pink one! I'll ask my friend? As for a store that has one I'll look in some of my Japanese magazines cause there's tons of ads in there, but I recomend you start your search in downtown Tokyo or Shinjuku!!

If you go to Tokyo and go guitar shopping you should definitely check out the Ochanomizu area. There is a street that has a few dozen guitar stores. Shibuya and Shinjuku have nice stores too. Of course check out the Ishihbashi and Ikebe chain stores.

Have fun.
