As far as I know, the JS has always had the angled square heel with a plate.

I only have 1 (JS6), so am not sure. I think that they are all the same. The picture you've posted - couldn't that just be an aggressive shimming/angling of the neck? A setup preference to really lower the action?

The JS-1 is not angled, because in order to produce that kind of angle, the neck would have to be "reverse angled" and the strings would be lower at the bridge than they are at the neck, which is likely not the case. The aggressive sanding is likely on the top of the white JS-1, sloping the body downward. Or the neck isn't sitting flush with the bottom of the neck pocket. Can you slip a piece of paper in between the bottom of the neck and the neck pocket?

Looks like as someone said negative shimming. Its not common to see shimming that way. Normally shimming is opposite to that having the shim at the other side of the pocket. Looking at the pic the action is quite high so i recon the shim may not be required. I would remove it, check neck relief and re-set the lot.

i can't low the action, my bridge is almost at the bottom of tha pole, but it still high, you mean i should remove the "shim"? is that safe? i'm afraid hurt the wood or something, it's an old man, you know.

If it's unplayable it's worthless anyway. Just unscrew the neck and see what the issue is. Use the proper size screw driver and be careful.
