Is the JS1 any better than the later/current models?

Everything was spotty back then. You could get a really well sanded contoured body, or one that wasn't. In details quality is better today, but the old me still loves the Edge and thru mount nuts, as well as the real BLACK of the 1's.

It's preference.

no not really. there are some differences in the neck radius i believe, but the js series (japanese built) have always been solidly built instruments. and i've owned a js1 and currently own a js1000 and 2 js6s. they are all awesome guitars.

I have a JS1 wh which has the best feeling neck of any JS I have but then I also have a JS1 black and the next isn't the same. I still say the JS1200 is the best JS I've encountered.

Actually the JS2PRM sounds a little better than the 1200 but I'm afraid to really use it much...

(as long as you haven't bought it for collector / keep it pristine purposes, of course).
