I bought that mag too! *#29 was FTLOG and #30 was Surfing with The Alien by Satch. *Some of these people have no idea what they're talking about. *Nirvana doesn't exactly do solos IMO, it's just like powerchords with no words being sung.

Finally, it would be nice to please stop pigeon-holing "grunge" as kurt-like guitar playing, etc. That is totally wrong from my perspective, having lived thru all these eras. Also, in the early 90s there were MANY top guitar albums by bands at the time (Soundgarden for example) that devours the glam rock weedly-weedly "sissy" nonsense (using your terminology) it replaced... glen
I dunno Glen. *There are plenty of folks who liked Soundgarden, but I smelled it then, and I still do. *I still think that band is ****. *It seemed like such a mockery of Sabbath and Zeppelin. *I don't even like those bands, but the original was better than Soundgarden. *It seems like the 90's sacraficed technique and forethought for the sheer power of heavy riffing. *I'm not saying everything should be powder puff metal, but there has to be a mid-point between White Lion and Cannibal Corpse. *I have no issues with a band that wants to be heavy. *I have issues with people who would have me believe that it's not good or artistic to be a good musician. *That was at the heart of it. *I was 16 in 1995 and I distinctly remember playing For the Love of God at Guitar Center, and some flannel-jockey laughing to his friend about how alternative is about art, not wacking off. *I thought to myself, I thought alternative was about wacking off on art? *To me , that music was an insult. *Probably how Van Gogh fans feel everytime a Jackson Pollack canvas sells for $24 Million.

I remember the JS6, it came out right around the time of Joe's self-titled return-to-roots album. *That was a dark time:

JS6
Joe Satriani blues album
Vai's "S&R"
Van Halen's BALANCE

I feared that good guitar was dead.
Actually the JS 6 had finished it's run by the time Joe's eponymous blues album came out. The JS 6 came out earlier and can be seen in the video for "The Extremist".
It's an incredibly versatile guitar and I've had nothing but compliments about mine, from shredders to blues guys

The JS700 with the P-90 pickups coincided with the release of his blues album. Joe modified one of his JS 6 guitars with P90s I guess as the prototype for the JS700 and added an extra volume control.

I was a grunge fan until I heard van halen one. It was at a time that the radio was ignoring Speed metal and the like. I had never heard anyone play like that and literally set with my mouth open. I had to be able to do that. I got my first ibanez that christmas, and my chops took off from there. Guitar was a gift to me and music always will be too. One has to remember there will always be stupid people in the world. I also have a Kurt Cobain interview where he talks about really liking metallicas kill em all. Sometimes the attitude works, but when people like vai get caught up in the bull**** and slammed because they arent artisitc enough? That is artsy rock the very epitome of the word if you ask me. Ive just always felt it was sad that such great musicians get slammed. Think for example if you had to listen to six guitar players on the street corner and all they did was play guitar no singing, who would you listen to? ALot of people think that music without singing isnt a song. Thats the biggest crock of radio influenced bull**** Ive ever heard.

You guys didn't like Sex and Religion! WTF

That guys voice was angel like! And the tunes were all well written, and
full of emotion!

WTF, if it doesn't have some MAD technique it's a **** album? That's
what I'm seeing a lot around here...you guys need to get out more, or
hang with Yngwie less!

Of all the Vai CDs, S&R is my favorite, followed by Alien Love Secrets.

You have to understand, the stuff in S&R is the kind of stuff Steve does
for fun when he just wants to jam with a real band, with a real vocalist.
THATS MUSIC!

EVERYTHING CAN'T BE *PAW*
That would be lame.

Honestly, I love Passion and Warfare, but I can only listen to it in doses.
There is just SO MUCH in every inch of tape, that it overwhelms the
senses...

Actually, Alien Love Secrets came out that time. S&R was '92-'93-ish.

So the difference between the JS1 and the JS1000 is Passion + Warfare? Or was it Soundgarden? I think I got lost somewhere...

Passion & Warfare and Slip of the Tongue were the two CDs that were wholly responsible for completely ending any interest i had in instrumental guitar rock.

I bought Joe's Engines of Creation because it sounded a little different in terms of writing and production. I've listened to it a few times, but it's not in regular rotation. In fact, i never even ripped it to put on my iPod.

But i've still loved Joe's guitars, even though i didn't listen to his music for over 10 years.

This thread started out discussing JS guitars and ended up debating '90s culture vs. shred, LOL. The '90s were such a dreary, miserable time for music, I am glad they are over. It is now safe to actually be able to play your instrument again. The whole flannel shirt/goatee thing escaped me, I don't see how it was ever considered cool in any way. Same for the playing by these bands. Pretty much of all those hip '90s bands no longer exist anyway, interesting eh? :imaginary thumbs down emoticon:

I think soap bars rock personally, although of course they are not meant for shredding. I adjust my playing style somewhat depending on what guitar/amp I am playing through, not every guitar is meant to shred. The natural finish mahogany JS guitar with soapbars (model #?) would be one of my first choices of that line, along with the JS1000.
