as in if he has a mate who has one, then he could show him how to set up a floating trem when it comes time to change strings.

I have a Honer ST Custom with a Steinburger trem on it, are the floating ones any harder to setup, a bit like this one with select pickups http://www.fast77.com/guitar/red.jpg

Re: JS 1000 or JS 1200 for beginner

there's not a huge amount of difference between these guitars. The 1200 has the mo' joe or something along those lines..
the 1000 has paf pro whereas your 1200 has joe's signature dimarzio placed
as playability goes..theres not a lot of difference..id say for the saving of £200..go for js1000

? The JS1200 is slightly cheaper than the JS1000 in most UK music shops at the moment, however a 1997 JS1000 went on the bay for about £416 tonight!! I was quite tempted, however the seller wasnt that responsive in answering questions about the guitar so I backed off.

Re: JS 1000 or JS 1200 for beginner

I'm as cheap as anyone, but please consider a professional set up.

Every shop has a pro guitar tech, but do your homework and make sure you take it to someone with a solid reputation (not necessarily a trained luthier, but that's ok if he's good) It's worth the $50 or so that a basic set up requires. Lots of people are not getting the most out of their axe and never realize it. The intonation and playability could be better.

Once done if you take good care and maintain it yourself you can go 10 years maybe even never need a pro again.

Another thing to consider for mass produced guitars (pretty much anything under $2,000) is a full fretboard restoration. You can take a $300 - $500 low to midrange decent guitar and pay $200 - $300 more and have an instrument that plays better than any mass produced guitar on the planet.

I purchased a 540r radius on **** that I had a chance to play before I purchased, and thought was in nice shape. When I had a pro set it up he said that the frets were very uneven and that he wouldn't be able to get acceptable action without excessive buzz and choking (fretting out bends). He recrowned the frets to perfectoin and leveled them to within a 10,000th of an inch. He completely reset and stabilized all the frets (you'd be surprised your frets shift and a few thousandths of an inch makes a difference) and he resurfaced the fretboard to perfection. The result is much better than new. I couldn't believe the difference. I took my old RG440 roadstar 2 DX in as well, and I can't believe a $350 guitar can absolutely blow anything else off a mass production line out of the water. It's like getting a PRS for $500 - $600. I tell guys this story and I get all these rolling eyes, then when they get a chance to play it they are blown away.

Only a few top shelf luthiers can really pull it off, but it's worth every penny.

The JS 1000 and JS1200 are amazing guitars. Best shape ever for a guitar, and the highest form of strat. That said, basically the 1200 is red. The mo joe is a slightly hotter fred and is the same price. Same deal with the PAF Joe, and in that case I much prefer the PAF pro. Basically Ibanez charges more for no reason, it's pure market perception. I do like the red though.
