The only resemblance to Strat's is the "Strat feel" you experience playing JS's 900, 1000, 90 HAM, JS 10Th (the ones I own). Don't know about the new models or fixed bridge models.
The 900, above all the others, is even more close because of it's neck shape.
Regarding sound, I found it different from a typical Strat tone... Whoever more close to it when we compare the Strat tone with a JEM or RG.
You're never gonna get that close to a proper strat sound with humbuckers, even with a coil tapping and fancy switching. From my experience you just get a thinner, weaker sound and doesn't even approximate what you'd call a classic strat tone. Im a huge fan of joe and have listened to him loads but his closest strat sound isn't that close to it, maybe that's intended, im guessing so. It is a great smooth tone he gets though and I think the best example of his amazing tone is on Until We Say Goodbye, from the engines of creation album, beautiful playing and killer tone.
I don't totally agree, there is so many different kind of sounds with so many different strat, i have owned some fender stratocaster(std us), tried some others, from mexican to custom shop, the JS can sounds pretty close to some of those, because we can't speak of ONE sound, there's too many.
For sure if i want the sound of the jeff beck stratocaster i ll' just buy the jeff beck, or the eric clapton stratocaster, gilmour ect..., but if i just need something near the "spirit" of stratocaster the JS is fine.
Joe made an interesting comment in this month's issue of Guitarist about approving a new design...
