JS Single Coils Sound

Hey Guys,

I have a JS1200 coming in from Rich soon, and I was curious on how you guys would compare the JS coil tapped sound to a Fender Strat? When I was playing one at GC I played around with it but didn't think to compare the sound. But if any of you have a strat and a JS I would really like to hear your thoughts.

Re: JS Single Coils Sound

IMO no coil tapped can be compared to a strat single coil sound. Maybe I played too much fender at the store but I played a ton of coil tapped guitar but still I prefer the real thing. I don't know why.....

I have a 1200, and to be honest, most of the time I never use the coil tap...Doesn't sound Strat-like at all.

The coil tap function will get you close to a single coil sound but it's not a true single coil by any means. If you want to hear what it sounds like, watch Cool #9 on the Live dvd.

Thanks for the reply guys. I figured it won't be exact, there is just a certain bite or grittiness to a single coil on a fender. I remember reading on review that compared it to a noiseless fender single coil.

I actually use the coil tap sound on my JS quite a lot but make sure the hi-pass filter is engaged otherwise it is muddy. Also play around with the tone control a little to smooth the sound out.

Thanks, good note. I have become quite the tweaker with volume and tone knobs these days, so it should be fun to experiment with the sounds.

Re: JS Single Coils Sound

On my JS1200 I use the coil-tap with the neck pickup and high-pass filter engaged for clean stuff, like SRV's Riviera Paradise. I really like the sound, but no, it doesn't sound like a Fender.

Re: JS Single Coils Sound

I've found that pulling the coil tap can back off the output of the guitar, cleaning up the "dirty" sound quite a bit, if I'm doing something from the 70's that's usually what I'll do rather than lower the gain on the amp. On the clean channel, it's definitely different from the double-coil setting, it's not nearly as full or as loud, but it lacks that front end "pop" that a real single-coil has. It's certainly useful, and you can make some nice sounding tones, but I don't think anybody would ever mistake it for a fender in a live setting.
