js tone

I have a js and I love the way it keeps a somewhat clean tone no matter how much gain I throw at it. It's easy to keep solos clean with this guitar. But, on my other guitars, the notes just sound a little fizzier if you know what I mean. Anyway, I wondered if it was due to the basswood body, but then my 7 string is basswood too and it has more of that fizzier sound. Would the body contours have anything to do with it? What else would contribute to the js tone (in regards to keeping notes clear)? Thanks.

Re: js tone

It might be due to the fact it's a shorter scale guitar, the PAF pickups also contribute too i think, the qualities you're noticing might be attributed to the 'tubular' sound people sometimes use to refer to the PAF pickup.

Re: js tone

Mine's just a 100, so I don't have the PAF. But yes, I'd say tubular is much more of an accurate description.

Re: js tone

What shorter scale? The JS is a 25.5" scale. That's not shorter.

Re: js tone

IMHO, it's most likely due to the pups. The Fred & Paf Pro (and now Joe) are not as high output and buzzy/fizzy as are many of the other pups people tend to slap in their Ibanez axes. With the tremendous amount of preamp gain available on todays amps, super hot pups are always not necessary and moreover, will even work against you in many situations.

Re: js tone

That may be true, but again, he has a JS100, not a JS1000. He does not have the Fred/PAF combination. Though it may still be true for the Axis pups (if that's still what is in there). I haven't used them.

Re: js tone

I put a fred in, but I didn't replace the neck pup, so it's still the Axis.

In honesty, I always get the feeling that the Axis pups have a similar sound to the PAF pros, albeit with a slightly limper output. Not as much fun to use really.

Re: js tone

That's what I thought too. I never noticed that much of a difference. I usually end up playing a lot of my lead stuff with the neck pup rather than the fred.... which I've never really done on any other guitar. Hmmm....

I remember the FRED taking me a long time to get used to. You need to find an amp that suits it and your playing style well to get the most out of it...

Re: js tone

I put a fred in another guitar a number of years ago and I've loved the tone from it. But it didn't seem to have quite as much output in the js. I just ended up getting used to and liking the neck pickup more in the js than in other guitars.

Re: js tone

I also really really love the tone of the neck pickup with the coil splitter on!!! That tone is soooo sweet bluesy.
