JS1000 Setup - Nut Height...

I've just purchased a js1000btb, great guitar; however i'm having trouble lowering the action. *I feel that there are two main problems right now, nut height and possibly the frets. *My main concern now is the nut height.

The nut height is approx. 2.3mm (this is measuring from the fingerboard to the string @ fret-1; it is virtually even across the entire neck). *There is no shim, nor does it seem that i can sand the neck down, sanding any more will result in passing through the actual fingerboard and the truss rod is also in the way. *Are there other nut sizes available? *any ideas?

As for the frets, i think it's fairly straight forward, once the nut is adjusted i'll gradually flaten frets 12+...

Any ideas or thoughts would be ~greatly~ appreciated, thank you...!!

I looked at the nut closely this morning, there is about 2mm of fretboard left under the nut on the bass side, and on the treble side there is about 0.75mm of fretboard left.

The treble side's action (strings 1&2) are very close to being where i want. *Would you suggest sanding the bass side down slightly? *How much fretboard is left under your guitars' nut (both sides)? * Thanks again...!! *I'll get some pics of this guitar up soon, gotta see the finish on this baby

a picture would be nice. That said you should re-read the Jemsite-->Guitar-->Tech/Setup section. It seems you need to file the nut evenly across the fretboard. There is no need to worry what is underneath the nut, only that you file cleanly, and enough to get all strings at the proper action. Good luck... glen

Thanks for the reply, i've asked around a bit and it sounds as if the nut should be sitting level (which it currently does not).

I don't know how far down I will sand (of course a little at a time), would it affect the guitar in any way if i sanded through the fingerboard? *I don't think it would, but would just like to check in case i may want to lower it that much (i doubt i would have to), thanks again..

Use a fine, flat file... not sandpaper. Going thru the fretboard to the maple neck is just fine... glen

Mine is routed below the fretboard. As a side note, whenever the truss rod nut is in the way, I dremel a round recess in the nut. Some nuts are made that way already. *

Just looked, mine has a round space cut out of the nut. I have another chrome one from another JS, which is just flat... Strange.
By the way, I had to put tons of shims underneath the nut to
get the buzzing out. It's not completly gone, but its better *now. If I adjusted the trussrod, the action would be too high. And if I lower the trem, the high frets on the high string would dull out when I bend them..... I guess I need to get some fretwork done..... And that on a near new guitar....

They made a change to a larger truss rod so the newer nuts have a channel in them for the truss rod. You might be trying to lower the action too far, it is a 9 1/2"-11" radius board.

Yeah, the standart trussrod tool is pretty useless on the JS. Now one must remove the retainerbar before you can insert an allanwrench (i think that's what you call it..)

No. When I bought the guitar (new), it was the whole guitar and nothing but the guitar. No case, tools, booklets or whatever.

I was lucky to get strings with it..

I don't care what country you're from, a complete wrench kit comes with them from the factory. Go to the shop and make them cough 'em up!

Got them. Now that was a usefull trip.
I brought the guitar with me, and the tech guy fiddled around with it, and now it has a normal amount of shims, decent action, and little to non buzzing. I need to practise my setup techniques, I guess....

(While he was busy on the guitar, I had a change to check out that new UV7 thinggie... Sweeeeet...)
