JS6/6000 owners - which pickups with mahogany...

I'm wondering if anyone swaps pickups the mahogany JSs and why...did the mahogany body & fixed bridge darken up the FRED & PPro? Or do they sound pretty much the same as the trem & basswood JSs?

I think my JS6 is darker than either my JS1000s or JS10. There's more midrange shove to the tone, great for drop-d or detuned riffs.

The 6's sound isn't as crisp and focussed though, but its definately "bigger" I don't know if that's cos of the body wood, or because of the trem/fixed bridge issue.

Great guitar though

Re: JS6/6000 owners - which pickups with mahogany...

I toyed with the idea of buying a JS6 as it has a lot of the things I like in a guitar - same fret size (6105), same fretboard radius, mahogany....but they are not easy to find & major bucks...so I ordered a sculpt heeled 'S' mahogany body & mahogany neck from USACG, outfitting it with a Wilinson trem, tried a bunch of bridge pickups in the test axe, FRED was the best of the lot. Got a pafpro neck PU. Cannot wait to get it all together. Almost done finishing the wood.

Seymour Duncan distortion in the bridge worked for me on my 6. The FRED sounds like a wee mouse in comparison (IMNSHO).

But I've never been a DiMarzio fan, so call me biased.

LOL, the distortion is a very different pickup, more compressed and different EQ. Either a Fred or a PAF or a distortion can sound huge with the right eq & amplification, but try cleaning up a Distortion....Fred's got a lot of range, and if you amp has the gain you dont need a distortion PU but still, they are fun. One day I'll do a seymourized guitar.
