Very true. A player's fingers are probably the single greatest contribution to a unique sound and expression. When I saw Vai and Satriani perform at the "Guitars in the Round" seminar last year, it was a in a very small auditorium. Both players simply had their amps and a few pedals, and sounded so distinct (not just in the obvious note selection and phrasing). I closed my eyes during a portion of one of the jam sessions and could instantly tell who was playing (
Steve Lukather,
Tom Morello, and Trevor Rabin were also there) .It was really eye-opening to me to be sitting there and realize that no matter what kind of equipment you use, you will still sound like 'you'.
