So this project has been on a wild crazy ride of pain for the last 3 weeks.. I will explain..
I went and picked up the guitar body painted by Ernie.. It was quite a good paint job, as could be seen in the pics . I could have left it as is and it would have been a satisfactory paintjob for most...It was a clear over base white. Im not saying it wasnt a good paint job. I was after a more factory thicker looking solid color. I buffed it to see if i could get what i wanted and polished straight through the clear coat. This combined with a few other issues it did my head in. I couldnt bear it anymore , So i re stripped it...FFFFUUUUUUUU
I sanded and primed it and re base coated it in white with aerosoles, then many coates of clear... the ususal technique. When the clear was drying it contracted and cracked the base coat white.. FFFFUUUUUUUUU
I was by now feeling very bad and wanted to give up... I bit the bullet and consulted my neighbour who is a pro spray painter and bath re enamel finisher. He recomended i coat the guitar in Enamel solid color with hardener mixed in. So i borrowed a gun and some nice 3M enamel paint.
2 coates of primer and sanding, 4 coates of enamel white then sanding then another 4 coats of white. This builds up a big layer of coating which allows me to block and sand to a super smooth hard surface. Basically impossable to sand through and stuff up. So much to work with... I sanded with 800 grit , 1200 grit , 1500 grit and 2000 grit.. I then gave it its first cut and polish today... NOW THIS WAS THE FINISH IM AFTER.. Thank god.. It turned out AWSOME. I can now relax in the thought my guitar paintwork is spot on..
