Noisy pots

Hi,

Is there an easy way to fix noisy volume (and poss tone) control on an early 90's JS?

I see a previous question about this for newer models that says they can only be replaced, but wondered if it was any different on the older machines?

if its just scratchy try some contact cleaner on the pot.. But be careful not to spray it all over the place it comes out extremely cold.

Ok, cool. Being a complete novice when it comes to guitar repairs where should I be spraying in particular (presume directly onto the pot in the cavity, but any specific aiming point)?

Also, any particular brand/type?

Told you I was a novice.... : )

well to be honest if a pot is noisy I replace it.. There only a few bucks each..

But you asked I responded LOL

yeah just use some pot cleaner from a guitar shop or radio shack... or just replace it all together.

Damonhill... just pop into maplin's and get a can of contact/switch cleaner (i forget exactly what its called) it comes with a little directional tube.
"mask" the surrounding area with kitchen towel or something and then spray a load of this stuff in... turn the pot about 5 squillion times and repeat until there is no more noisy pot !!!

easy !

costs about 3 quid.

Cheers guys - replacing would be daunting as its on a rare JS.

So, if I'm spraying this (liquid) cleaner in, would a can of compressed air not sort it also?

(....ok, you can stop rolling around laughing now)

no, it wont, buy the contact cleaner...
its a solvent that will dry quicker than you can think "sh1t, i got it on my paintwork" and leave no residue at all..

air just wont do....

Do not overspray. A split second is plenty enough. In the end if it needs replacing then so be it. There's nothing special about rarer guitars that keeps their parts good forever.
