Optimal pickup heights - JS 1200

Just wondering what in your experiences has been the best pickup height for both the neck and bridge pickup in the JS 1200...

I believe the pickup height question is "whatever sounds good to you." Not very helpful i know, if i remember i'll take a measurement of mine when i get home. Though i have a mo joe in the bridge rather than the fred.

yeah, there are no universal measurements in pickups height, in the same model guitars neither. the rule of thumb is: not too close to the strings, but not too far neither. too close is about less than 2mms, and too far starts from about 4mms, measured from the top of the polepieces to under the strings, while fretting them at the last fret.

Here are the basic rules to follow:
- Closer = more output, less dynamics,
- Farther = less output, more dynamics
- Too Close = false/warbly tone up the upper frets and with some pickups you will actually lose sustain.
- Too Far = weak output

You can also tilt the pickup (bass side lower than treble or vice versa) to balance out the overall string response and if you're really pickup, you can adjust the height of the polepieces (assuming they are adjustable) to balance the the output between strings.

A certain amount of air between the pickup and the strings can do wonderful things. More critical on single coil pickups, but most humbuckers need to be "dialled in" to a certain extent as well.

Some pickups, like the beloved Tone Zone, sound like poop if they're too close.

well the mojoe in my js100 is pretty close to the strings. the evo sounds awesome close to the strings. my les paul is the only guitar that i have a little space in between.
