Return of the Snake!

I just saw Joe in Austin on Saturday, and he broke out the Snake for the encore! That's always been my favorite out of all his painted guitars. Does anyone know the history of this guitar?

don't know much, but it had the best tone of all the guitars Joe used in Amsterdam, he used it quite a bit; IIRC.

Snake has always been typically setup in drop D. If he used it for more than 2 songs he's changed the tuning on it.

I thought you were talking about the song from 'Not of this Earth.' Now that would have been news. Damn...you got my hopes up.

yes this guitar has been setup for drop D tuning for quite awhile as Rich mentioned. It's used for almost only 2 songs Friends and Train of Angels. He might be using it more for his new album but I think that's more 7 string stuff than drop D.

As far as I can remember the Snake was only used on Friends in the encore in the Amsterdam Concert. But Joe's performance may have made it look like he was using it on more than just one song

Oriental melody. friends, train of angels, and I THINK belly dancer although I'm not certain about that one...

Oriental Melody is deffinatly drop-d coz when he played it in manchester he introduced the song saying that he was bringing out his 'snake charming guitar'...

yeah, I remember that line,

problem with snake is that it looks so impressive, it dominates...I guess that's why I thought I'd seen it being used on more songs. It goes well with those pants too...

In Hamburg on July 15th he used it on the aforementioned songs, as well as "New Last Jam." Drop-D indeed.

Check out any of the latest guitar mags, Satch is holding it in the Korg Toneworks ad. The one with Vai and Petrucci.

When he played in England a few weeks back he was using "The Snake" in Drop D tuning. I don't know if it's the resonance of the low D, or what but I really love the tone of that guitar.

Doesn't this guitar have a trem on it? How does he go about drop tuning it if such is the case?

I watched a clip of him doing this song at rehearsal on his website, and it LOOKS like there is a trem installed.

Anyone know?
