or maybe find a used SV series. or an RX or RT series i think both of those had a similar JS style neck on the radius series it was called an ultra neck and on the rt or rx it was a viper neck.. both feel very nice....

Go with the RT. The neck profile is similar to the JS series (a Viper profile), but the body is more RG-style and no worries about dealing with a double locking trem system. PLus you can find them pretty cheap.

I have forgotten about this thread... Here's a pic of how my 440R looks right now with a Mo'Joe and Paf'Joe. The neck is a matter of taste, but the body is certainly very comfortable.

Actually, the neck pocket is sort of in between the fender and a 2 1/4". I bought the 2 1/4" and opened the pocket up a bit. Other option would be shimming a fender neck. I was advised by someone with a lot more experience building than I have to go the 2 1/4" option. He's actually the guy that is painting it for me.

+1 on the Viper neck. Those Viper fretboards are fairly flat, although nothing like the Ultra. Check this out:

http://www.jemsite.com/jem/necks.htm

It looks like the Viper is the closest you'll get to a "chunky" (for Ibanez) neck with rounder fretboard like the JS series.

actually the viper doesn't have too flat of a fretboard radius. it is flatter than the js series at 250, but 305mm translates to 12", which is what you'd expect from a les paul and even some strats. standard rg radius which is 430mm and that is close to 17", which is very flat. the viper fretboard doesn't feel anything like a rg fretboard imo.

Re: what is the next-closest guitar to any js series?

I own a JS1000 and an SV470 (Viper Neck). I will confirm for the OP that the SV series guitars are very similar to the JS. The neck does have a nice JS-ish fretboard radius but not quite as round. And of course the body is a bit slimmer and is Mahogany.

I consider my SV-470 to be second in command to my JS.

Re: what is the next-closest guitar to any js series?

The OP doesn't explain what was wrong with his JS other than not being able to play it after 3 set-ups... The only thing I can gather from the post is that he likes the neck.

The guitar that comes closest to my JS10th (essentially identical in terms of fret size, fretboard radius of 9.5", back of neck curvature, etc.) is the Fender Standard Strat HSS with the Floyd Rose. The exceptions are that it only has 21 frets, and the body isn't routed for trem up-pull. Of the two that I have, the 2001 has a swimming pool route that enables you to run any pickup combination, and the 2007 has an HSS routing. With a neck shim to tilt the neck back, I can set the trem for flutter and up-pull. With the tummy-cut and forearm contour on the Strats, they are similar in comfort to the JS; also, the weights are about the same (none being as light as my basswood 540R). Both the Floyd Rose II (2001) and the Ping FR (2007) can take the same amount of trem abuse as the Edge without going out of tune.

Not bad, especially considering that Satriani based his JS model on his FrankenSTRAT...
