When does Joe use the coil Tap and High pass filter?
Just curious to know.
I'm again GASsing tremendously for a JS. I used to own one in the days I didn't know how to handle that Formula1, and I didn't have the impression that especially the High pass fiilter did something for me.
So please, enlighten me here

Re: When does Joe use the coil Tap and High pass filter?
I think the best recent example of those features would be Come on Baby from Satchifunkulous. Most of that song has one or both engaged. In my own experience, the
coil tap
obviously makes a huge difference in tone and volume from off to on with most set-ups and settings. The
high pass filter
doesn't do much unless your volume is rolled back. It is MUCH brighter when engaged if your volume is down around "3" or so. Conversely, if you have the volume dimed, you won't really notice any change.

Re: When does Joe use the coil Tap and High pass filter?
The JS is a great instrument, in some ways superior to the Jem in my opinion. In terms of electronics, the high-pass filter is pretty much always engaged on mine. I usually play with the volume knob all the way up, at which point, the filter makes no detectable difference at all. Set up that way, the volume knob almost becomes more of a gain control, wherein rolling back the volume results in a cleaner sound with a bit less volume but a very similar overall tone. With the neck pickup on, high-pass filter engaged and volume rolled back to somewhere in the 30-50% range, the guitar sounds so Satch-like, it's frightening.

Based on how my ears hear it, I would say that the solo on the song
Super Colossal
is either recorded with the neck pick up coil tapped or it was recorded on a Stratocaster's neck pick up.

I always engage the high pass filter when I use the split coil switch, it just makes it more musical and usable.

The volume knob cleans up your tone on all guitars, hi-pass or not.

Yes, but usually you lose tone. With the high pass filter you can keep your tone and clean it up a bit.
A good example of this is when satch plays Always With Me Always With You. He lowers the volume knob a great deal to clean up the intro.

I wouldn't say you lose or gain tone with the filter. You lose or gain treble, and engaging the filter makes it brighter and crisper. For me, sometimes I want that, sometimes I don't.

Re: When does Joe use the coil Tap and High pass filter?
I just went to get a
JS1200
I had been keeping an eye on for a while. And indeed, the high pass filter makes much more sense now. It clears up the tone at lower volume settings indeed, and like smooth55 says, it gets crispier again.
Now hat strikes me again is the lower output the Fred seems to have. I really digg the typical (slightly nasal some people call it, I find it to have some kid of mouth harmonica tone to it), but I find that I need to turn the gain up on my amp/pedal settings quite a bit to get in the higher gain kinda tones Satch uses on lots of occasions. (easier to end up with a mudier tone). Have you guys bumped into these problems and how did you deal with it ?

Re: When does Joe use the coil Tap and High pass filter?
I would adjust my pick-up height if I felt like I needed to up the output but didn't want to add too much gain from external sources. Still, there are some other factors like your amp settings that will play heavily into things. Sometimes just a touch of EQ goes a long way and I usually find that I simple adjustments to any part of the signal chain require total re-tweaking of everything else to compensate and adjust to what I want to hear.
