You guys seen this? WARNING- BRUTAL CHROMEBOY DAMAGE

Posted on the vai forum. Strap came off and well, you can see what happened. Any hope for this guitar?

Also, WTF are these things made from? It looks like foam and ballistics gel

Luthite is a high density foam, evidently coated with a gelcoat of some sort for surface strength.

Like a surfboard, sort of......

Only solution I can see to that kind of damage is to fill it with epoxy, smooth it off and rechrome the entire body by someone like SIMs - not cheap, I wouldn't think......

That's what I told him. It was a player anyway, after that crash there's no collector value anyway, restored or as is, it's real as it is.

If I was the owner, I reckon I'd use some automotive bondo to smooth it out. Then once it's cured and sanded down to match, I'd get a piece of chrome vinyl to cover it up. You know, just so it didn't look so hideous, and so it didn't constantly remind me of the time it crashed down to the ground.

Or do HULK 2 with some bright green paint......

You're totally right Rich, any refin is hardly worth the effort due to the subsequent non - collector's value.

I've just always believed in letting a guitar live it's history.

I mean, just that little area covered in chrome vinyl. It's on the back anyway. I'd also do it to stop myself and anyone else from chipping more of the finish off.
