Cool

1988 RG760DG Ibanez turning green!!!

Hey Guys,

I have an interesting question. Has any of your Ibanez's turned a different color?

In 1988 I bought an Ibanez RG760DG (Dark Grey) and have stored it in its case for most of the time. I have used Gibson guitar polish for 20 years plus on all my guitars, I have 8.

Two years ago, I had my buddy (certified mirco solder tech and super meticulous) change out my middle and neck pups. At that time he said it was a cool green paint job. I argued that it was grey, he said I was crazy and going color blind.

Could be but now that I look at it today, it has turned green! I wrote/sent pic to some friends at DiMarzio and they were baffled. They told me to ask you guys.

Having two Ibanez's, a Saber and RG760, I should have been a member long ago. Both guitars are custom now and very special to me.

Do you guys have any clue what has happened? The green is not only on the body but under the pickups so polish is ruled out.

Thanks,

junkdk

one of my guitars that i slapped together has turned greenish/yellow but that is because the half assed paint job, my mate found some left over silver at work and we didnt know what type it was so we just guessed when we put the clear on (i cant remember what we put on it). It was just something to cover the wood on a crappy guitar lol

Re: 1988 RG760DG Ibanez turning green!!!

It's pretty common for the clear coat on older Ibanez finishes to go yellow like that (the yellowing in this case making the grey look green). Most whites that have been exposed have turned yellow, I used to have a PGM30 that had turned pretty yellow, my Vinnie Moore model has a yellowed body, but the finish on the neck must have been different or sanded down a little, because it's still perfectly white. To me the worst that I've seen is a lot of DSY 550s that have turned from a bright yellow-green to a nasty orangish yellow from too much exposure to light.

The thing that's kind of a mystery here is that if you've cased it, it shouldn't be so bad I wouldn't think. My 550 DSY has been cased for most of the last 10 or 12 years after playing it out a lot the fist 5 or 6 years I had it, and it's color is still brilliant.

Yeah, but does that diminish the value?

I love this guitar but I want to hand down it to family when I die. As now an investment, does it carry value?

Or should I put to the shredder?

The color will not show up equally on peoples monitor, depending on their settings. So you may not get an accurate answer.

thats the same sortof thing thats happning with my clear, not as severe tho. Im not sure they even use clear anymore, the paint shouldnt chip like they do nowadays if it had clear. Thumbs up for keeping it in this good condition over the years BTW

Just keep this as is.
The value of the guitar is on the ORIGINAL paint, whatever it's yellowed or something... LOL.
So please leave it that coooool greenie colorand enjoy!
Cheers,
Tubarão.

As long as it doesn't have alot of chips and dings, thats what will diminish the price.

As for color, I dont think anybody you try to sell it to will remember precisely what they looked like 18 years ago when they came out.

And everybody likes green guitars anyway!

I wouldn't count on an 88 RG as a retirement fund...
