2003 RGT42FM - Best value in a solidbody electric... ever?

Okay, now that i've got your attention...

My local dealer had one of these in the shop today. Wow. I could not believe this was a guitar costing less than CAD$900. (FYI, Canadian retail prices tend to be bang on or just slightly below American list prices.)

The flame maple was very pretty, and the trans red had a nice stain that showed off both the maple figuring and nice grain on the mahogany back. The 5-piece maple/walnut neck was also clearly visible through the stain... it wasn't dark and murky like some past Ibanez transparent colours. The fit and finish was very, very good for a Korean-made guitar (a little bit of colour bleed onto the binding in places), and the Edge Pro II looks extremely good in Powder Cosmo... it's a lot more forgiving than the high-gloss chrome and gold finishes.

Overall, i was extremely impressed. This guitar is an outstanding value for the money. Drop in some aftermarket pickups, and you've got a top-notch guitar on all accounts.

I only hope Ibanez makes fixed-bridge and 7-string (trem and fixed-bridge) versions of this little gem of a guitar. (No pun intended.)

Though i've played the red RGT42 for a few minutes at NAMM... it's indeed a very solid guitar of Korean origin suprisingly but I personally don't like painted necks. If the neck wasn't painted, it'd be a great guitar... but wouldn't that be its Prestige brother the RGT3120?

Darren,
Ironically, I just posted a mini-review of the RG370MW in the 'new trems' thread, as I mainly concentrated on the Edge Pro II.
The '03 Korean made instruments in general appear to be a remarkable value.
Ibanez has really raised the bar (pardon pun).

The RGT3120 has a clearcoated neck as well. They just fade the stain out between the body and the headstock.

I definitely prefer oiled necks, but lately it hasn't really bothered me at all playing on a shiny neck. In fact, i find very little bothers me about any guitar these days. If it's moderately playable, i'm happy.

thats why you sand it down and oil it yourself. IVe seen guys do it on $$$ Jackson Soloists and it turns out great.

I bought a neckthru Kramer Baretta and I plan on doing that, mebbe turning that budget guitar into a keeper
