520QS progress-And Pic testing

Here is how far i have got, Thanks to eddie for the great tip (now i only have about 40,000 chips of paint everywhere lol)

Anyhoo, pic test below ...

Sorry for size

Comments please guys, I'm leaning towards taking the veneer off completely and black trans finishing or Natural Sapele Quilt finish ... Maybe an old school monkey grip to boot

I like the black trans idea that would look cool. Not to sure about the old style monkey grip but then again it's your guitar ;o)

Good job on stripping the finish!

So, how are you striping it? Are you using a heat gun?

Thanks to our great Eddie (as in EKG, Check his site), i'm using a Razor blade this time round ... Hard work but ultimately less messy ... Althou the sealer needs stripper, Wish i had a blow torch but it's been knicked (thats stolen to you unfamiliar)

p.s. Do i get a free Prize for the plug Ed

That quilted sapelle top is so beautiful its a shame that they didnt have a nicer color on that guitar. Id love to have mine look natural but im just scared of the time involved in such an endeavor

Re: 520QS progress-And Pic testing

Ok, So change of plans here, the veneer top is off, leaving a 2 peice mahogany body, not a bad looking bit of wood mind you, but a warning to all rg520qs owners, DO NOT USE STRIPPER !!! in fact i'm pretty sure a heat gun would bugger it also as it's attached to the mahogany with "TAPE" not glue

Rob

Comicbook or Mirrorball, Unless anyone knows a good UK source for 1cm thick veneers

Re: 520QS progress-And Pic testing

Hey man, Not my fault there was a cost cutting excercise and Ibanez in there infinte wisdom decided to use double sided veneer tape instead of "real" glue lol ... It bloody hurt when i realised what was occuring, But it's a real nice bit of mahogany underneath (as he legs it and push fits guitar together for a quick pic) ((neck wobbles too much))

As if by magic lol, I'm very happy with the look so far to be very honest, Gutted i lost the sapele top, but this looks nice with 2 coats of teak oil

Rob

p.s. Wanna trade my old UV for a JS mogrel lol

Re: 520QS progress-And Pic testing

I had the same issue with the veneer lifting when I stripped mine with heat. The veneer is just to thin. Those pickups look good with the oiled finish.
