540R - Crack in Paint :(

Hi All,
I just bought a '91 540r. The guitar is in really good shape considering it's age and has a great feel. One issue though is that there's a crack in the paint on the front of the guitar that goes from the front strap button all the way down to the bridge. I guess for a guitar this age i'm not too picky about cosmetics, but the fact that i paid what i think is on the high side for the instrument it's kinda bugging me. Is this type of thing common for a guitar this old? Should i be concerned? I'm wondering if someone at some point tightened the screw too much and caused the paint to crack.

It actually looks worse in the photo than up close. The flash really makes it stand out...up close you don't really see it unless you're looking for it

Yeah it looks superficial...only in the lacquer.

Can you buff that out with a high-end auto wax/rubbing compound? It doesn't look all that deep.

Pretty sure it's a stress crack. Some Going to take it to a tech to check it out. There is some fret buzzing also...not sure if it just needs to be setup or if the neck is not straight. Depending on what the tech says i may return it. Too bad, it's a sharp looking guitar.

I would have to see it. It depends on how deep it is. If your fingernail can go into it then it's probably a crack.

Well, it's a Radius – they command $$. You'd be insane to sell it (as I assume you've been jonesing for one of these for a while), though I'm sure there are plenty of willing folk out there who would be willing to take it off your hands .

Remember, wood moves, even if it's dead, and this is probably what's happened here. So, wood movement; tightening of screws; or drastic temperature change.

My former RG developed such a crack off one of the pu ring screws a few days after I bought it – temperature change from where it lived and probably not enough finish curing time. My old Roadstar has a similar crack over the control cavity on the front. You can feel it if you run your finger or fingernail over it, but it's cosmetic.

Plus, it's not a new guitar, so some elasticity in the finish may be lost, which, in conjunction with the factors I mentioned, would cause this.

Re: 540R - Crack in Paint :(

at least the paint isn't as bad off as the paint on the original 7620's. my 540R's clear has started ambering and looks amazing over the red. your paint issues don't seem to be as bad as it appears. keep in mind that pre-aanj axes typically had neck pocket cracks. your problems may just be an extension of that.
