540R Radius -- unusual color

Hey,

I have a number of 540R (Radius) in a variety of colors, but here's a color I've never seen before. I had no luck capturing it in a photo, so you probably can't tell much from the images. It's not JR (Jewel Red), but much more of a pinkish hue. Most people would call it pink rather than red. I'm guessing that it's the SK (Shocking Pink) that appears in the 88 catalog although the catalog pic appears way more of a traditional pink than this guitar. This one has an '89 serial number and SK was listed as an option in that year as well.

I've never seen a 540R in more perfect condition. It's absolutely mint with case candy, zero fret wear. Definitely a surprisiing find.

Couple of pics:

I REALLY wish Ibanez would re-release these guitars with the modern advantages like the AANJ, etc

I think that's Coral Mist Metallic. You can see a Shocking Pink in this thread and it's more neon:

Either way, a great guitar in a cool and unusual color.

Didn't know about that one. What years was it produced?

I've been trying to come up with a good description for this color. It's sort of a metallic pink, with a bit of a copper flavor to it. Not very helpful, I know.

Re: 540R Radius -- unusual color

According to the Ibanez Wiki (can't speak for their accuracy) Coral Mist was 90 and 91. It's hard to tell by the pictures (from the catalogs and from the pics above), but if yours looks coppery in person it could be Copper Metallic. There's another thread with a CM on Jemsite here: http://www.jemsite.com/forums/f18/sh...-108185-2.html

Not Coral Mist Metallic. That's REALLY pink. I believe it's Jewel Red.

I believe the guitar is a 1989.

Re: 540R Radius -- unusual color

Thanks!

I searched for pics of Coral Mist Metallic and they all seem to be more orange/red than this guitar, but they may have had the same difficulites capturing the color as I did. Likewise with the copper-metallic. I'll try again later to get more accurate pics. Regardless, I'm loving this thing.

I hate the copper metallic, but that color is really sweet.
And those are great guitars with the right pickups in them.

Re: 540R Radius -- unusual color

I couldn't find a picture of a Radius in Cranberry Red but it's in the catalog pic for the 1989 Maxxas on Rich's site:

http://www.ibanezrules.com/catalogs/us/1989/maxxas.jpg

These colors always seem hard to photograph accurately.

Re: 540R Radius -- unusual color

Yeah I was thinking Cranberry Red as well. Here are some Maxxas's that color.

[http://www.*******.com/guitars/ibane...z%20Maxxas.jpg (the stars should be ed roman)

It's much more purple than Jewel Red. CR is not listed in the catalogs as a color that the Radius was produced in, but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

Re: 540R Radius -- unusual color

OK, I think LNG#16 pegged it correctly as Coral Mist Metallic. I found an old 2009 thread on the Ibanez Collector's Forum in which an Aussie was also trying to figure out the color on his 540R. The first pic below is from the Euro 1990 catalog (CMM is 3rd guitar down) and the 2nd image is his guitar. The catalog pic looks more bleached out than mine, but the neck heel shot looks close but maybe slightly less pink than mine.

Re: 540R Radius -- unusual color

Yeah, I don't think the color is Shocking Pink. Here's an SK from 1988. The photo captures the color pretty well.

Weird that it has a Back Stop. Everything else on the guitar points to '89. The neck has large dot markers. The pups are not the original IBZ/USA.

That other fellow's guitar looks kind of like Champagne.

Good catch on the Back Stop -- it actually doesn't have one. I had asked the seller if it had one and he said yes, but when I looked there isn't one and no prior mounting holes. I don't think they knew what a Backstop was.

So I agree that it's an '89 -- everything fits, although the color remains slightly puzzling. CM still seems closest, but I'll have a look at some Champagnes.

Re: 540R Radius -- unusual color

That's a beauty!
It does look like the Coral Mist.
Certainly not SK.
Could even be a spot production color, as it looks more like a pearl finish--like Coral Mist Pearl.

Either way--it-s a keeper.
