A Candy Apple red 1987 RG 550 ?

Is there such a thing as a A Candy Apple Red 1987 RG 550? Just curious if some one I am talking to is confusing it with Fire Alarm red

I didn't think that was one of the original colors anyone know?

Without looking at the old catalogs I don't know, but I have a old 570 that's Lipstick Red. It looks alot like something you might call "Candy Apple Red". If I didn't know any better that's what I would call it.

No, CA wasn't an original 1987 colour, only RF, DY, BK and WH were originals.

FA (Five Alarm, not Fire Alarm) is like a very bright orange.

Re: A Candy Apple red 1987 RG 550 ?

One way that an RG550CA could appear to be a 1987 model is if the body was used from a later model (when CA became available) and bolted to a 1987 RG550WH neck.

The 1987 white finish RG550 had a black headstock. All 1989 RG550's had a black headstock (the only year a non-matched headstock 550 was made, as far as I know).

Bret, see PM's.

Re: A Candy Apple red 1987 RG 550 ?

Definitely. Looks like a nice axe, but whether it's original or not is questionable. The seller might just be claiming it's original so he can bump up the price. Personally, if I was wanting to spend the kind of money he's asking I'd go for an RG 20th because it's a similar price, and to me, the 20th is superior because of the super-strong neck, relocated volume pot, and hotter pickups.

If you just dig the colour, I don't think you can go far wrong if you were to buy it. Just have a few reservations about the authenticity of it being an original.

Dee, I agree........

I do get the 20ths too whenever I have a chance (2 so far)........however I have this fear that one day......I may need parts in order have the guitar I love so much...but none will be available....So I am buying what I can now I am trying to ensure that I will always have a 550 with a maple board!

yeah.......but 550...........I can't tell but the image name on those says 1550 but other wise yeah.

Hey DEE

What is the difference between the RFR (road flare) with matching headstock and the Five Alarm red (FA) are sure that what showed you is not a FA as apposed to a CA know what I mean?......

because it seems like it could be an 88 FA red but with an 87 serial...what do you think?

Re: A Candy Apple red 1987 RG 550 ?

I'm not too sure what the finish is you showed me. Candy Apple Red is nothing like Five Alarm. CA is way darker.

FA = very orangey red
Candy Apple = dark red with a subtle sparkle
RF = Neon/fluorescent red

The problem is many Ibanez finishes are poorly represented in photographs, you really have to see them to get an idea of the intensity of the colour.

But yeah, it could well be an '88 FA with a '87 serial. I have seen quite a few Ibanez with "wrong" serials, for example, my old RG3120.

It's all a bit of a mystery!

I had an old 570...and don't laugh at this picture..it was taken in '89 or '90!!

it was more red than orange, so it may have been Candy Apple.

Re: A Candy Apple red 1987 RG 550 ?

I was not educated enough about Ibanez to know what year it was, but I am guessing it was 88 or 89, because I bought it used for $200, I do remember racing to the ATM machine before somebody else bought it. I had a 540SLTD in the same color that was a 90, so it was most likely 88 or 89. Sold that one a long time ago, after I got the 540s, maybe in 92?

Could it be a Lipstick Red? Makes sense, if it was a 1989.
