Alright...

I have been thinking of doing something to my ibanez rg1527.

The paint on the guitar is totally chipping off because i have played it hard over the the past years and i have been thinking of sanding it down so it would have a natural finish i also added a pickguard to it, and ill probably put some dimarzios in it.

if i did strip the paint off what coating would i have to apply? if anything?

i know this may be a total noob question.

Re: Alright...

Polyurethane is the most common clearcoat if that's what you mean. You can also go with nitrocellulose, which is much more time & labor intensive - it requires a lot of thin coats to get a glossy finish, which is one reason why Gibsons are so expensive. Or you could go with a few thin coats to give it a satin finish and let the wood's natural resonance ring out a bit more.

As for paint, just avoid water colors :P

Re: Alright...

If the body is constructed like the 7620 it is probably made from 3 pieces and has some thin veneer on the front and back. I don't think it will look good with a natural finish. See how mine is here:http://www.jemsite.com/forums/showth...t=72468&page=2 post nr.27....

Re: Alright...

Here! One natural finish PGM!
it has also had all of the edges sanded down so that it is more curved than the original RG shape, not quite JS curved but gives a cool effect

Re: Alright...

I like the rounded edges. I've always like the shape of the EX series bodies, but I just wish they came on higher-end models.
