Unfortunately, back-bow can be that bad. There are two reasons that it can make a neck useless.
First; If the nut was too tight (putting the neck into back-bow) for an extended period of time, the maple can develop a "memory" of that position. With that "memory" the nut will loosen very quickly, putting little to no tension on the neck, but the neck has only rebound slightly.... but still in back-bow. I've been told that the neck can sometimes be brought back to original condition by steaming and clamping but in practice only seen this method add to the necks problems (twisting, cracking, de-laminating the fretboard)
The second reason is if a neck is exposed to extremely humid conditions for an extended period, without proper maintenance. Again the neck will bow, but because of the extra dampness the maple will develop "memory" again, but much faster. If this is the case, the repair process will be VERY long, and yield minimal, if any, results.
