Those Meshuggah dudes sound detached, uninformed, ignorant, and with absolutely no pizazz to their demeanor...IMHO

I'm not into the 8 string thing either, by the time my son is 18 they'll be strapping on pianos and hooking it to a metalzone.

Ted Nugent did a ton of innovative things with a Fender 6 string Bass, under his guitar lines...

anything ordinary people can't understand becomes ridiculous, or freightening. metal machos were saying pretty much the same thing about the 7-string in the early '90s, then Korn came out and horizons got wider, like it or not. and the 7-string guitar is pretty much a normal, everyday instrument, nobody gets scared by it, nowadays.

i wouldn't be surprised if someone will ever start playing metal with a Chapman stick, one day.

Now THAT would be interesting! Nuno hits the mark again.

What's the big thing with the 8s? It's a variation on a guitar..... are bassists as disparaging about 6s?

It works for Meshuggah* and others; they buy and play the guitars. If it doesn't work for you, DON'T. The mere fact it does not appeal does not automatically make it ridiculous - after all, every Jem owner has been mortified at some stage to have the same thing said about his/her preciousssss. Hell, every guitar owner virtually.

*and they use every part of the extended scale it provides.

@Alecmm - if you want a 7-string Iceman, commission one. It's that easy.

Re: Custom 8-string Iceman - Meshuggah!

I heard a lot about Meshuggah in the last few years but never really heard anything, so I was at the music shop a few weeks ago and saw Catch 33 for $10 so I grabbed it, and OMFG!!! these guys are beyond sick, I thought SYL was the heaviest and loudest band I ever heard until this album, wow, my ears rang for over an hour after blasting this album in my car for 30 min. LOVE IT. Total brutality is what I think of when I think of Meshuggah.

http://jeanbaudin.com/

Jean plays 9, 10, 11 & 12 string (non-coursed) bass guitars. More strings, more notes and more notes, more possibilities... and if you look up some of the classical and game theme music he's posted to YouTube, he makes good use of them. So don't hate on the extended range instruments, just listen.

Never actually read a full review of a Warr, so I'd love to know what you think of it and how it is to play....

Wow.

Christ! I had to turn it off! First of all, it seems like the main guy doing the talking doesn't really know what he's on about. Secondly, those riffs have to be a joke, surely? Are these guys for real?

8-string guitars suck. Especially when there is no tonal definition AT ALL! Leave the lows to the bassman.

A LNG/DY/SK piano with a fluorescent vine on the keys would be sooooooo cool!
